Illuminor Szeras is getting a big upgrade and showing how much better the Necron Characters could look.

Games Workshop is bringing a new and very much improved Illuminor Szeras model to Warhammer 40,000 with Psychic Awakening: Pariah. It’s not just a new sculpt – it’s larger and looks much more imposing than the previous version:

The new version took a lot of the same elements of the old model and just took them to 11. It’s a great move and the Necrons actually have a pretty large roster of named characters that should get the same treatment.

Here are 6 of the Necron named characters. Looking at the picture above, notice anything about all of them? Like how “samesy” they all are. Other than slight differences in scale from the pictures, my problem with all of these characters is how much they look alike. “Here’s a staff and a robe.” Did they all go to the same Wizarding School? The only two that kind of stand out are Vargard Obyron and Orikan the Diviner and that’s because their poses are different. The other 4 are almost interchangeable.

If you set them up in a police line-up and asked a non-necron player to identify them you’d have a problem. I’m the one that put this image together and I can only accurately call out Trazyn because he’s the one with the Eldar and T’au runes on his belt. The others? Necron Overlords? Eh, close enough.

Different pose, looks more unique, and is the “generic” Necron Overlord.

What I’d love to see GW do is the same thing they did with Illuminor Szeras. They took the things that made that model stand out and amplified that. The bigger base sized absolutely helped and it can be done with all the other models, too. Look at what they’ve managed to do with all the updated Primaris Marines. There is precedent for these types of upgrades and considering all these characters are “finely detailed resin cast” miniatures, they ALL need a rework anyways.

I’m not saying their current models are bad or even that dated. They aren’t near as old as the Aeldari Phoenix Lords. It’s just that if Illuminor Szeras can get a glow-up, why can’t the rest of them, too?

Brothers, your day is coming…eventually.

…And we didn’t even mention the C’tan either.
