Goatboy here with a Night Lords list to tide us over while we wait for 9th Edition!

With 40k getting a new edition its hard to write up Armylists right now.  This has me looking at fluffy stuff to try and fill out an army list or two.  I am looking at Single Detachment, 2000 point, and pure Chaos Legion army lists.  This isn’t looking at the normal stuff and instead tries to figure out ways to build something unique within the list that at least fits the overall theme of the army.  Of course – who knows if any of this will work when the new edition comes out.  This is the problem with announcing new rules and not – producing the rules.

I understand from GW’s point as they just restarted the factories so getting the new edition out and shipped in time to start the hype wagon would be hard.  I am just being a bit of a whiney fan boy who wants to play with the new rules – like now!  Maybe they could do a Willy Wonka thing with James Workshop and a bunch of 40k people trying to become the new James Workshop.  We could have a set of videos where they go to the factory and see all the servitors and grots working to mass produce never ending bolter rounds and floating chain swords.  Or this could all just be a fever dream of being locked in the house for too long with a 5 year old, almost 2 year old, and a tired wife of said children.

Anyway – let’s get a list out of the way that utilizes stuff that might see a massive change with updated FW books.  I refrained from weird stuff that causes Mortal wounds and just went with pure Bullet action.

Criminally Good Tactics

The idea here is to use the Dreadnoughts to cause multiple units to have -2+ to leadership due to the Butcher Cannon rules.  The Zerkers were picked because of the ability to double activate and get closer to the enemy – thus causing a bigger spread of the -1 to leadership Aura of the models.  The Warp Talons are there as the cool looking Night Lords units and the ability to jump in and hopefully cause a lot of interesting damage.  The Exalted Champion allows the Zerkers to reroll wounds which is important as well as give out a flat 3 damage power fist attack that can be extremely useful – especially with a reroll to 2+ to wound.  The Sorcerer is there to throw out Warptime and Prescience as well as being Mark of Tzeentch to cast another spell if needed.    This idea all initially started because I thought – what would a competitive Night Lords army look like – and this is what I came up with.

If I could have Raptors as a troop unit I would look there – but as is they just don’t do enough to justify their points.  I think there is an option to play them with World Eaters but for now – will just look at Warp Talons and their ability to perform some nonsense.  It feels fun enough and would look neat on the table top.  Of course it could all be moot when the new book comes out – thus looking at more different legions to build armies for.

Until next time – Death to the False Emperor.
