Games Workshop has a new update for the Forsaken and Restricted lists for Warhammer Underworlds. What’s getting changed? Come take a look!

Warhammer Underworlds is a game built around keeping things competitive. It’s tagline is “The Ultimate Competitive Miniatures Game” and to really be that GW has to keep a closer eye on the game and the cards and combos therein. On the plus side, it seems like GW is committed to doing just that. It’s one of their few games with what amounts to a banned and restricted list akin to Magic: The Gathering. And a recent update is shifting the meta once again.

Dave Sanders, lead game designer for Warhammer Underworlds:”…we use the Forsaken and Restricted lists to ensure that problematic cards don’t get in the way of the game, and to keep certain other cards from appearing in too many decks. Our intention is not to prevent a particular play style, but to make sure that there isn’t a single dominating way to play and that no one play style is suffering.”

Just a heads up there are two different formats that are directly impacted – the Championship format and the Alliance format. You can follow those links to their respective format rules pages.

So which cards got hit? Here’s the list:

This is the first time they have taken the step to restrict warband specific cards. Here’s more from Dave on that.

Dave: “For the first time, we’re also restricting a handful of warband-specific cards. This is not a decision we took lightly, but we’ve been monitoring the perceived power level of warbands in the Beastgrave meta, and we feel that we cannot make the adjustments necessary to ensure that everyone is having a great time playing Warhammer Underworlds simply by forsaking or restricting universal cards. We’ve restricted one card each for Stormsire’s Cursebreakers, the Thorns of the Briar Queen and Lady Harrow’s Mournflight, and two cards each for the Grymwatch and Hrothgorn’s Mantrappers.”

Another change that’s new is an errata to a specific card with Varclave the Cruel getting an update:

If you’re curious about the why behind the changes, check out the Warhammer Community article for a breakdown of why each of these cards were added to the lists.

I hope GW keeps working on updates to Warhammer Underworlds with an emphasis on balancing the Warbands and cardpool!
