Vampires and their minions get a whole lot tougher at night? Who would have guessed. Check out how nightfall will impact your trek into the Cursed City.

It’s a pretty well established trope that “the things that go bump in the night” prefer, well, night. In the Mortal Realms that still holds true. As you’re prepping to travel with your adventuring heroes into the Cursed City you might want to take account of the amount of daylight you’ll have to do so. Why? Because it’s an in game mechanic that can really amp up the danger for your party.

“During your games, the passing of time is represented by a daytime tracker, which slowly ticks away until nightfall – that’s when things get nasty. “

“Each enemy card has two sides – one to use during daytime hours and an Empowered version that activates only after nightfall. “

So THAT’S what the sun and moon icon in the corner were representing. In the case of these Bat Swarms, they get a few tweaks at night for sure. For starters, they get an extra die on their attacks. While they don’t have any major changes to their statline, their Behaviour Table does get re-jiggered. They becoming a lot more hostile and trade out a couple activation actions for a more dangerous Frenzied Assault. You’re definitely going to want to roll low for these Bats when Nightfall happens.

“As you can see, these Bat Swarms behave differently at night – they’re far more aggressive and dangerous. If that’s the case with some of the most basic hostiles in the game, we imagine it’s much more pronounced with the vampiric foes. “

They just want to drink your blood…

It’s not just the enemies that get tougher to deal with – Nightfall also brings some new challenges in the form of new Crises that can happen at night.

It’s a quick Agility or Defence roll and if you fail, you take a point of damage. It’s simple but effective. You don’t want to take these little hits as they can really add-up later on. Time is not on your side when you’re heading into the Cursed City as it’s going to be a race against the clock to get in, complete your mission, and get out before the denizens of the dark come out to play.
