In Dungeons & Dragons, all that glitters might be gold, but gold is a lot heavier than you’d expect. Here’s how to carry all that treasure.
Alright friends, let’s talk about the most important part of Dungeons & Dragons–getting away with all that hard-won loot from the dungeon you’ve just been raiding. Fighting through tough monsters is one thing, but how are you gonna get all that gold out? In D&D every 50 gold pieces is a pound. Which means if you have the task of capturing a dragon’s hoard, which can contain hundreds of thousands of gold coins, that’s 5,000 pounds per hundred K. How can you get it out safely? We’re here to help.
Tenser’s Floating Disk
There’s a reason this spell has been in the game since 1st edition, and that reason is to carry all the loot that the wizard can’t. It creates a circular, horizontal plane of force that can carry up to 500 pounds–which is a fine start, but that’s not going to get us that 100K gp out of the dungeon any time soon.
This is the magic equivalent of a coin star–you take raw material, such as a patch of hemp or wood, and magically convert it into a product of the same material. Which for us means taking the raw material of gold and converting it into something made out of gold and valuable but also less heavy. You will need proficiency with the right kind of tools in order to create items with a high degree of craftsmanship, like jewelry, but if you’ve ever played Skyrim and changed gold and emeralds into a much less heavy gold necklace, it’s the same principle.
Get Critical (Role)
In The Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, which is an official D&D book, the Graviturge mage can adjust the weight of one object or creature that you can see within 30 feet of you. You’ll have to find a way of making the gold into one object (which, hey that’s what the Fabricate spell is for) and then you reduce the weight of it with your gravity mage.
You can combine that with the Enlarge/Reduce spell which also halves the weight of a single object you reduce, so you can potentially quarter the weight of your giant unwieldy golden statue.
Polymorph Yourself Into Something Big
If all of this is still proving to be too difficult, you can always polymorph yourself into something big enough to haul all that weight. Or if you happen to already have powerful build, then you’re already set.
