‘Army of Thieves’ Aims to Give Fan Favorite Dieter a Backstory

Want more of the anxious safecracker from Army of the Dead? You’re in luck – Dieter is being resurrected for a prequel.

Netflix is expanding Zack Snyder’s zombie universe into a full cinematic universe. Army of Thieves is the first of those projects and will be followed by Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, an anime series that happens years before Army of the Dead (would be cool to see what happened in Vegas between the initial infection and when the heist crew arrives). Snyder spoke a bit about the move with Variety.

“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the ‘Army of the Dead’ universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation. It’s been a great collaboration and we are thrilled that Netflix sees this as big of an IP as we do.”

The new movie is focused on one of Army of the Dead‘s better characters – Ludwig Dieter. The safecracker is hired by a mysterious woman to pull off a top-secret heist with a bunch of misfit thieves. It takes place at the very start of the zombie apocalypse. The story is from Snyder with a script from Shay Hatten (John Wick Chapter 3, Army of the Dead).

It stars Matthias Schweighöfer as Ludwig Dieter (he’s also directing), along with Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Jonathan Cohen, and Noémie Nakai.

I liked Dieter and was sad to see his story end the way it did plus I’m a heist movie dork, so I’m willing to give this a shot whenever it shows up later this year. Hopefully, it takes the best of Army of the Dead and does something creative with it instead of being a repeat sans hordes of zombies.
