Magic: the Gathering returns to Kamigawa, only things have gotten a little more cyber and a lot more punk. Get your Shadowrun references ready.

Next year is going to be a big year for Magic: the Gathering, with more sets, Premiere Sets, Secret Lairs and format-twisting expansions than you could possibly imagine, as long as you can only imagine like five of those things. But it all kicks off with a return to one of the most-requested planes, the Japanese-mythology inspired Kamigawa. Only now, we’re returning to a Kamigawa set 2,000 years in the future, where magic and technology rule over the land in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty.

Let’s check it out.

The feudal past of Kamigawa sets the stage for the far-off future we return to with Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Filled with high-tech delight and homages to fan favorites, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty comes to stores in the first quarter of 2022.

As a part of this set, we’ll get to see a new “cyber-ninja” Planeswalker, Kaito. And rumors abound of an as-yet-unknown Planeswalker as the current emperor of the world.

If you were following the news back when Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty was a possible leak, this set will also introduce Jin Gitaxias as a Reality Hacker (which sounds like a promotion from Core Augur).

This also gives the artwork from that Magic art-style survey a home, as we’ve seen some Planeswalkers reimagined as having cybernetic/telekinetic magical abilities.

So fire up the Vangelis, and let’s get ready for the neon-and-rain drenched cards of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty.

What do you think of the new set?
