GW is bringing us an all new Space Marine chapter – The Wolfspear.  Along with all the bells and whistles for using them on the tabletop.

White Dwarf 468 is headed your way soon and again GW is bringing forth some awesome lore and expanding the 40K universe. I have to say that the revived Index Astartes series is a breath of fresh air and the most exciting thing White Dwarf has done in years. It’s a return to GW’s roots of using White Dwarf not only to promote their games, but to actively expand and extend them each month. It makes me eagerly await what new corners of the grimdark will be illuminated each time I crack open a new issue.

This month we get a rare treat – a Space Wolves Successor chapter. It’s a rare thing because for those of you who know your 40K lore, the unique Canis Helix within the Space Wolves geneseed has made successor chapters a rarity. Only one Space Wolves successor chapter, the Wolf Brothers were known to exist pre-Indomitus Crusade. Well, Cawl did away with that and made a new Primaris chapter based on Leman Russ’ genetic material:

Meet the Wolfspear

Enter the Wolfspear. This chapter was given over to the Space Wolves on Fenris by Guilliman personally. Their arrival and very existence caused much consternation and discord within the chapter. Logan Grimnar stepped in and ordered them to adopt the organization of the Space Wolves, not the Ultramarines and began to observe them in combat – where they earned the respect of the warriors of The Fang.

In the footsteps of the White Dwarf 458’s Tome Keepers

I’m sure the story will be fantastic, just like the earlier Tomekeepers were.  The real test is can you put all this amazing lore into action on the tabletop and here the answer is yes. GW says:

“This issue of White Dwarf contains not only lore, squad markings, and a full codex supplement, but also a rather handsome transfer sheet and three Stratagem cards for the Wolfspear.”

I really hope this is part of a grand plan, and all these chapters and their rules & decals get bundled into a standalone book one of these days. There’s no reason to keep this marine-centric. This White Dwarf series would work fantastically for minor Craftworlds, Astra Militarum Regiments, and the like.

If any White Dwarf staff are reading this.  Complete the circle to the very beginnings of 40K with an Index Astartes: Mentor Legion. Pretty please!
