Audiences almost saw Sam Wilson’s Falcon in The Eternals. Why didn’t he make an appearance in a post-credits scene?

The Eternals writing team disclosed in an interview that Anthony Mackie’s Falcon was originally in the running for the film’s post-credits scene. If Sam had made the appearance, he would have been the only character from the outside MCU to actually appear in the film. The writers also mentioned the reason he wasn’t, indicating an eventual MCU team-up of epic proportions.

Spoiler warning– on your left! Okay? Let’s go.

Eternals writers Kaz and Ryan Firpo told Screenrant in an exclusive interview that Sam was the original post-credits plan for the film. So why was there no Falcon in The Eternals? Well, according to the duo:

“There was a version where Sam [Wilson] turned up at the very, very end, in one of the post-credits, but I think it was something that… You’re going to see these worlds collide, but it’s gonna take a little bit longer than people are gonna expect.

Plus, I think in terms of the timeline, we just lost Tony, we just lost Cap, Natasha’s gone, Hulk is currently working on himself I think to make himself human rather than smart Hulk, so I think that all the Avengers were just pretty busy.

I think we’re happening more or less concurrently with Falcon and Winter Soldier, so everyone’s got their hands full and I think you’re gonna start to see the groundwork has been laid for something that’s gonna happen in a very big way soon.”

The Eternals Stands Alone

The MCU’s most recent film set itself apart from the typical MCU movie in many ways. It’s the first movie since Phase 1 not to include any greater-MCU cameos from characters we’ve already seen. Though they were mentioned, none of the Eternals crossed paths with the Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to the writers, this is intended to save the excitement for Eternals team-ups when we finally get them. Meaning that when Falcon does show up, it’s going to be a very big deal.

Eternals Post Credits Scenes

So in the end, there was no Falcon in The Eternals. The scenes didn’t pull the Eternals into the intricate MCU fray, but they did show audiences a wider Marvel Universe. In the mid-credits scene, the film introduced both Starfox and Pip the Troll.

Starfox is Thanos’ brother and also an Eternal. And it seems he’s the key to finding their kidnapped siblings (it’s often the parent, guys– has anyone heard from Arishem?)

And after a near two hours of being sidelined, Kit Harrington finally had his time to shine as the main character of the post-credits scene. He oped a box holding the Ebony Blade.  The film’s second post-credits scene also explored a more obscure corner of Marvel’s mythology: vampires.

That’s right! Just because the scene didn’t feature an MCU regular, doesn’t mean the character hasn’t been in his own Marvel movie. I’m talking about the highly-anticipated (voice) appearance of Mahershala Ali as the vampire half-breed, Blade.
