Rogue Squadron seems to be off of Disney’s release calendar for the time being. But rumor has it an Old Republic film is taking its place.

Disney+ Day is right around the corner. This Friday, upcoming Star Wars production news is bound to be a focal point of the event.

Casting announcements and rumors, working titles, and character names have been trickling out of the Disney camp on a pretty steady basis. But the next movie to come from the galaxy far far away may be a bit more in flux than we previously thought.

On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the upcoming Rogue Squadron film has been delayed by an unknown amount of time. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and writer Matthew Robinson have been in development on Squadron. The project was projected to begin preproduction by the end of 2021.

Unfortunately Jenkins’ commitments and project calendar have put this project off indefinitely. Rogue Squadron seems to be temporarily off of the production schedule altogether– despite a still-scheduled release date of December 22, 2023.

On Twitter, account Big Screen Leaks posted a mysterious tweet about an unnamed upcoming Star Wars project. This account isn’t any official source– but they’ve recently released details about The Book of Boba Fett and Morbius.

What’s Next for the Star Wars Big Screen?

So what’s next for the galaxy’s featured films? Rogue Squadron could be the first return of the Star Wars franchise to the big screen since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. But at this rate, it’s likely that another project will move into pre-production before that.

Rumor is that a feature-length Star Wars project is swooping in to fill the Rogue Squadron release date– and it’ll take us back to the Old Republic.

A Knights of the Old Republic movie was in the works back in 2019. And with the Knights of the Old Republic games as popular as ever, there’s been a push for High Republic stories. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a shift away from the Skywalker eras of the galaxy in preference of something completely different.

Unfortunately, Disney and Lucasfilm have made no announcement one way or the other. There have been potential name drops of almost every director and writer to work with Disney in recent years. And we’re heard the numerous Old Republic rumors coming out to nothing over the last few years. So little is substantiated at this point.

But we do know that Rogue Squadron is being pushed back indefinitely. Disney is holding its release date on the calendar, and something is supposedly being filmed soon. As long as it’s better than Rise of Skywalker, we’ll be happy enough to get back into the galactic drama.

Were you looking forward to Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie? Would you watch an Old Republic movie? Or is there another era you want to see on the big screen first? Let us know in the comments!
