Don’t skip Warcry’s Red Harvest; it’s well worth the grind.

After a relatively long dry spell, Games Workshop returned us to the Eightpoints with a bang. The release of Warcry Red Harvest, is the latest and possibly greatest expansion to the skirmish wargame.

Alongside a host of deadly new scenery and a double-sided thematic board, we are introduced to two brand new warbands. The mighty Darkoath Savages and the sinister Tarantulos Brood are here. We’ve talked about the scenery before here, but let’s look at the fantastic models we get in the two new factions and some of the different options for building them.

Tarantulous Brood

Viewing Chaos as the spider-like Eightfold Watcher, the Tarantulos Brood are masters of ambush. They hunt their prey in areas where they think themselves safe and trap them in nets spun from warp-strengthed spider silk. The models are all very spider-like, with the Broodmaster leader even sporting an extra pair of arms.  Their weaponry appears chitinous, wickedly curved and angled like the segmented legs or deadly fangs of a massive arachnid.

Officially creeped out!

The similarities don’t stop there, however, as the hooded Doomweavers trap their foes in sticky webbing. The underlings fling crude javelins dipped in spider venom to immobilize and envenom their opponents. They can even summon spider swarms to fight at their side. The kit gives us two bases of swarms as well as one base featuring a tarantula the size of a pit bull crawling out of a burrow. The models are all dynamic, each in acrobatic fighting poses. Befitting an army of spider-worshipping assassins.

Darkoath Savages

In contrast to the lithe Tarantulos, the Darkoath warband is full of stocky lads and lasses with massive weapons notched from use. They are the most devoted servants of the Dark Gods, and they shout bloody oaths (hence their name) to the powers above as they charge into battle, promising to slay their enemies in exchange for power. The Slaughterborn leader in particular is a very cool model, and can be equipped with either an enormous greatsword or an executioner’s axe depending on if you prefer higher number of attacks or higher damage. Almost every model can be built at least two different ways, and even the most basic warrior has modular weapons to customize your squad should you need to double up at all.

I’m coming for you Thulsa Doom…ahem Sigmar!

The Conan-like Proven with the massive broadsword and long slick hair is probably the most recognizable model. He generated a LOT of hype during the reveal. I will fully admit, I built that model with a flail, and even though the sword is the weaker option, I honestly regret not going full Arnie with the lad. Of all the models in the Warcry range, these guys are definitely my favorite, and feel the most like a squad of chaos tribesman fighting for the favor of Archaon.
