We know which codexes are coming to close out the year. So what’s in store for the codexes in 2022?

Games Workshop confirmed that the next two codexes are Genestealer Cults and Adeptus Custodes. We also got a sneaky confirmation that the T’au codex is coming early 2022. What’s even more sneaky about the T’au announcement is that GW said that the T’au would be “one of the first new codexes coming in 2022.” That means we might see the T’au get a “partner” codex release a la the Custodes/GSC release.

It does seem like GW is moving toward this new “battle box” release style for some of the remaining codexes — specifically for the armies that aren’t getting an major model releases. The GSC and Custodes are each getting at least one new character model. Those are in the battle box Shadow Throne.

We also know the T’au are getting a new Pathfinders box (eventually) thanks to the new Kill Team sprues.

So, having laid out all the confirmed stuff that’s coming or already spotted, where are we at with the state of the REST of the Grimdark and Codexes?

Confirmed:

  • Black Templar November 2021
  • Adeptus Custodes December 2021
  • Genestealer Cults December 2021
  • T’au Empire ‘Early’ 2022

Still Waiting:

  • Imperial Knights
  • Astra Militarum
  • Inquisition*
  • Chaos Daemons
  • Chaos Knights
  • Chaos Space Marines
  • Craftworld Aeldari
  • Harlequins
  • Tyranids
  • Ynnari

*The Inquisition is kind of a weird one. I wouldn’t expect them to get a full book at this point – at most maybe a supplement or even a White Dwarf update. We saw them get thrown a bone with the War Zone: Octarius Book 1 release.

We also know that GW teased some warp-based shenanigans2022 implying that we could expect some more Chaos elements as well.

So at this point we know what’s on the way and we know what’s still missing a codex. From the hints and breadcrumbs GW has left us I’m hoping we see some more Chaos Codex news in 2022. But warp-based shenanigans can mean a lot of things, too. Tyranids mess with the warp in a big way — would you consider those disturbances shenanigans?

There are some pretty major gaps in the Codex lineup going into 2022. Aeldari have been pretty quiet and they are in need of some attention, too. From the list of Still Waiting above you can really take your pick. Hopefully GW gets out the rest of the codexes in 2022.

Which codexes are you hoping will be after the T’au in 2022?
