Fallout has taken over hundreds of hours of players’ time and now the iconic video game is being adapted for the small screen.

Fallout made its debut on PC over twenty years ago (we’re old, it’s ok), and has been expanded multiple times. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic future inspired by atompunk that has plenty of 1950s callbacks. The theme was one that hadn’t been explored before. That and its sense of humor helped make it an instant hit. The games have achieved record-setting sales and received hundreds of awards, including dozens of Game of the Year awards.

Amazon licensed the game back in 2020 and rolled it into their deal with Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

“Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.” – Lisa Joy

The studio has finally made a move on it as they try to keep up with the streaming wars; and before they lose the license.

Along with Nolan, Amazon has secured Geneva Robertson-Dworet (2018’s Tomb Raider) and Graham Wagner (The Office, Silicon Valley) as showrunners. Their mix of action, sci-fi, and dark comedy backgrounds should make for a compelling show that understands its source. This will not work if it doesn’t include cynical humor and some well placed kitsch. This isn’t Last of Us.

No word on casting or when we’ll get to see this on our TVs.
