Peacemaker ep. 5 starts a touching moment from Eagley and one hell of a hangover. But what does the cliffhanger mean for the butterflies?

This week’s Peacemaker saw our team of misfits face off against a whole warehouse full of super-powered aliens. I won’t spoil anything before the warning, but let’s just say there’s a grenade, a tank shell, and a chainsaw involved…

There are a f#%!ton of spoilers for ‘Peacemaker’ after this gif. If you proceed and get spoiled, don’t @ me, suckers.

Murn & Waller Call in the Shady Man

We know Murn is a butterfly– what we don’t know are his intentions. Why is he killing off his own kind? And does Amanda Waller know what he is?

Whatever she knows, Amanda Waller is still pulling strings behind the scenes. She and Murn call in a man we only hear referred to as “Captain Locke”, who knows Murn from some previous mercenary work.

This guy definitely has a sinister air about him. From the way Murn talks to him, it sounds like he’s known to make a little bit of a mess. Likely the bloody kind.

Meanwhile, Detectives Song and Fitzgibbons hear Auggie’s claim that his son has framed him for his crimes. They take an alternate set of fingerprints and check them out the analogue way.

When they’ve confirmed that the fingerprints aren’t a match, Detective Song takes her findings to her Chief’s office. Only when she opens the office door, the scary man with the foreboding music has been appointed her new Captain.

Captain Locke insists that the second run of finger prints are still a match. He tells her definitively that the White Dragon will stay in prison, and orders her to take the night off to clear her head.

But Sophie Song has someone who can help, her very own relative, Judge Judy. No, not that one. A different one.

Peacemaker & the Warehouse of Butterflies

But let’s move on from the subplot and on to the main plot! The one with all the explosions and the action!

Our team is sent to follow up on Leota’s latest lead, a company called Glan Tai with a large warehouse listed under its name. When they go in, they quickly realize the factory is full of the honey-colored liquid that the butterflies eat. These are obviously being shipped out, and in such great numbers that it looks like there are more butterflies than the team anticipated.

Like, a lot more. And there are plenty of them hanging around the warehouse, too. Harcourt and Vigilante are quickly made, and have to trap themselves behind some heavy-duty doors to keep the butterflies from getting in.

Peacemaker is sporting a new helmet equipped with X-ray vision. The helmet allows him to see butterflies nested inside of human skulls, so he starts firing without warning. This scene is the bloody violence we’ve come to expect from Peacemaker– and that’s before Chris pulls out the grenade/tank shell combo.

That’s when Charlie appears. Yeah, remember that gorilla subplot I mentioned last week? Not a red herring! Missing gorilla: FOUND.

Actually, a butterfly is in the driver’s seat of this giant gorilla’s body. One of the workers refers to him as their “guardian angel”. And the butterfly seemingly gives Charlie the power of speech.

If you’re getting Gorilla Grodd vibes, you’re not alone. In the same year we’re expecting a Flash movie? Could this be an origi– oh, no, wait. Economos chainsaws him to death.

The 11th Street Kids

At the beginning of the episode, Peacemaker continues to bully John Economos. When Leota calls him out for it, Vigilante confirms that Chris has been a bully for as long as he’s known him.

As Chris continues to harp on John, the two realize they share a mutual love of Swedish glam metal. And after John goes all Evil Dead on the butterfly-gorilla, the team finally shares a moment of triumph together.

Harcourt, of all people, snaps a photo of the moment. She starts a group text, naming the group after a song John and Chris both enjoy.

Everyone is clearly feeling the kumbayas after the whole-sale slaughter of a warehouse full of aliens. Adebayo gives Chris a ride home, and he invites her in for a drink to celebrate.

The Conflict of Leota Adebayo

Leota is clearly experiencing a crisis of morals. At the beginning of the episode, she and her wife are having an argument. It’s clear that the job is coming between them.

Shortly after, Leota gets a text from Amanda Waller inquiring about the diary she’ll use to frame Peacemaker in case something goes off the rails. She’s struggling with this command, but goddamnit, not enough. Because she drops the diary in his home when he runs to the bathroom.

And that’s a shame. Because she and Chris have a genuinely endearing moment. The two chat about Harcourt, and she calls him out for using his overall dickishness to push people away. He finds himself moved by her expressions of friendship, then goes to take a fateful pee break that will definitely come back later in the story.

On the way home, Leota calls her sleeping wife. She apologizes to her voicemail machine, and admits that her job is really getting to her. Afterward, she can’t sleep, so she goes back into the office, where Murn is working late.

Just for funsies, Adebayo puts on Peacemaker’s X-ray helmet. But she accidentally discovers that Murn is a butterfly, causing him to immediately switch to super-powered leap mode. He chases her down, and the episode ends with him standing above her as she lays on the ground, completely at his mercy.

Peacemaker ep. 5 Easter Eggs & Highlights

This week, we’ve added Kite Man to the list of random characters James Gunn has made DCEU canon. It’s not his first appearance on the screen– Kite Man is one of the many highlights in DC’s animated series Harley Quinn. It’s doubtful we’ll see a live-action Kite Man, though… isn’t it?

Once again, Peacemaker shares another superhero conspiracy theory he found on the internet. This time, he asserts that Superman has a poop fetish. I’m not here to say whether or not Chris is right or wrong. I’m just gonna gesture at this face for a moment…

Speaking of fetishes, I am beyond tickled to see another appearance of the cuckolding couple. Bonus points to them for outright saying that Auggie is a Nazi and should stay in jail. When you’re right, you’re right.

We also get a look at mullet-wearing baby Peacemaker and his brother. We find out that his name was Keith.

And lastly, Peacemaker reveals his signature cocktail. It’s called the Peace Train, and it sounds just awful. As a former bartender, I’ve been trying to find a way to make gin, vermouth, vinegar, peppercorn, maple syrup, and butter sound good.

Honestly, I’ve got nothing. I’ll also just take a beer, thanks.

New episodes of ‘Peacemaker’ drop every Thursday exclusively on HBO Max!
