With Codex: Genestealer Cult coming soon it’s time to take a closer look at Brood Brothers and if you should include them in your list.

If you’re looking to supplement your Genestealer Cults firepower or heavy armor then the Astra Militarum are up for being recruited. Having a Leman Russ tank for some heavy lifting or bit of air support with a Valkyrie might be just the trick for tipping the scales in favor of Ascension Day. And if you’re worried about these troopers getting in the way of some of your other army wide rules, don’t worry about it. These Brood Brothers are quite loyal.

“You can include an entire Detachment from Codex: Astra Militarum in your Genestealer Cults army. Not only does this give you access to lots of additional units but, even better, it doesn’t prevent the Genestealer Cult units from using the awesome new Crossfire rule to gun down anyone standing in the way of your rebellion.”

That’s a lot to parse but basically here’s what you need to know:

  • You can include one Astra Militarum Detachment for each Genestealer Cult Detachment in your list
  • The Astra Militarum Detachment become Brood Brothers Detachments and you swap a bunch of Keywords
  • Brood Brothers Units can’t be the Warlord and can’t be given any Relics
  • Brood Brothers cannot make up more that 25% of your Genestealer Cults army

Fans of a certain vintage might even recognize the 25% limit on things. I’m not sure why GW moved away from percentages for allies in armies but that’s not really the point. In a 2000 point army, that means 500 points of it can be Astra Militarum units. That’s a lot to play around with!

Oh and don’t worry about leadership either because these Brood Brothers get a boost to that, too:

So is it worth including some AM units in your GSC? That’s going to be up to you based on your army. Plus, we don’t have the codex to flip through just yet…But that’s coming soon enough. Anyhow, opening up the Astra Militarum Codex, there are lots of things you can include under 500 points that could be handy.

As mentioned above both tanks and air support would be helpful. But don’t discount the Infantry units either. Bring some Heavy Weapon squads to help you deal with enemy armor. Maybe you need some fast moving and annoying to deal with Armored Sentinels to help out. Or maybe you just want 500 points of screaming Conscripts to clog things up. Whatever. I’m not here to judge.

And hey, if you’re not having a good time with your Astra Militarum army right now, why not invest in the Genestealer Cult side of things? Maybe you’ll find that the other Emperor has some shiny new toys you’d like to try for a bit. And if you enjoy using those I’m sure they are recruiting…
