Goatboy’s Warhammer 40k: Where is Game Post LVO?

LVO is over and the game has changed. Here’s what you need to know about all the new rules and codexes.

Between the whirlwind romance of a new competitive season, points adjustments, and even a rebalance or two the game as we knew it at LVO is no more.  Overall I am pretty happy with the changes and I am ready to dive into the new missions with hopefully a new army.  I am currently planning to use some of my Custodes as I got a rather large bike army that needs to get out there.  Sadly there are not many Salvo Launchers – but we’ll see about that as I figure something out.  Either way, let’s dig into the big changes.

New FAQ & Balance Update

First, we got a nifty balance update and a ton of FAQs.  Overall the biggest thing from the FAQ is a pretty significant nerf to the current Thicc city.  I would say removing CORE from both the Talos and Cronos is probably the biggest kick to that army – even though I expect Dark Eldar to just shift back to their old style of play with Incubi, Wyches, and just a ton more damage options.  This just means if they have Coven units it will be a bunch of Grotesques mixed with probably the most annoying troop in the game with the Wracks.  Overall it is probably for the best as that army doesn’t connect as well versus some of the other trap builds – but who am I kidding aren’t all the DE players just waiting for the new Eldar book to come out as that army has never not been broken when newly released in an edition of the game?

Stationary Answers

The next interesting thing is they finally answer the whole – if you count as stationary does it mean you ignore those pesky rules of not being able to assault out of a tricky deployed vehicle?  Like the whole Salamander thing with Impulsor’s a certain Texan was known to push around?  Of course with this type of ruling a ton of players are trying to shove it onto Trukk boyz but they seem to forget that Trukk boyz do not care about being counted as stationary – they just get to attack after getting out of the Trukk.  I am sure some events will have to write a little FAQ for it because enough players are complaining about it online but meh.

Sororitas Cherubs

The other fun thing is a nerf to Sisters and those pesky Armored Cherubs.  Now you can’t use two if you bought two at the same time.  I always found it a weird interaction as you are paying for a single use extra shot of a Multi-Melta. But when you are trying to skew into a devastating Alpha Strike you need all the melty action you desire.  Between the point changes and other bits Sisters need to tweak some of the armies to stay competitive.  I am sure there is a good list out there but a lot of Imperium players are moving towards Custodes as it is a fairly cheap army to build.

Custodes Look Shiny

Speaking of Custodes – they did pretty well at LVO.  Between the Crusher Stampedes and Golden Warriors of doom you had a lot of trouble dodging some of these matchups. I think the army is alright. It skews pretty heavily into needing to hit that 4++ mixed with some toughness options that make it hard for some armies to deal with.  I know my game versus them had a wonderful player feeling very bad for making so many Trajann saves.  I told him I live on the 4++ too and you just got more love than I did.  It is the life of this game.

T’au are Coming!

Of course we got Tau coming which will put some weird wrinkles in things as they can put out so much damage.  It again makes it seem like your army needs to have a way to always get a save (Invulnerable), mixed with damage prevention (-1D or FNP), and then have incredibly efficient damage dealers (Succubus, Drahzar, Grotesques).  It is probably why Marines are suffering as while they can do some damage. But it is just not enough to overcome how much pain comes at them.  When so many cheaper things are damage 2 what is the point of paying so much for a regular Marine who can’t answer back nearly as well.

I hope to get a game with the new missions in a week or so as I catch up on some artwork, miniature painting, and just family time.  LVO takes a lot out of me as I usually lose my voice (on day 1 this time), lose some sleep, and just the wear and tear of carrying my army across the casino/hall.  What are you excited about in the new landscape of the new edition?  Will this season be better than the last?

Will Chaos Space Marines ever get 2 wounds? Do these pants make my butt look delicious?
