If you see any of these HQ options on the tabletop across from you then keep an eye on it. These are the best generic HQs in the game!

There are lots of HQ options in 40k. But if you keep an eye on the competitive scene the best ones always seem to rise to the top. When it comes to the generic HQ options these 5 picks are the ones to watch out for. And if you have their army and aren’t trying them out…maybe give them a closer look.

Shield-Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike

The Adeptus Custodes are a rock-solid elite army and one of the biggest ROCKS they can throw is a Shield-Captain on a Dawneagle Jetbike. If you thought the basic Custodes was elite (and they are) then you’re really going to get a kick out the Shield-Captain version. They are fast, tough, and can dish out the damage in the shooting and close combat phase. Their only downside is their point cost…but that’s just an army-wide problem.

Drukhari Succubus

The Succubus seems to slip into all sorts of lists for the Drukhari these days. Why? Well, there’s a few different load-out options to go with but when you combine the right wargear with the right wych cult, mix in some stratagems, and take the right cocktail of combat drugs you get a mixed drink of death incarnate! The Succubus becomes a blender with attacks to spare. When you see one on the tabletop just be aware of the crazy damage potential that they can put out — and for surprisingly cheap!

Flying Hive Tyrant

The Flyrant (or Hive Tyrant with Wings) is a perennial favorite for Tyranid Players. There’s really nothing they can’t do. We probably don’t need to reiterate how good they are as they’ve been around forever. But in case you forgot, they are fantastic because they get to play in pretty much every phase of the game. They are tough, have a lot of wounds, are fast, can shoot well, slice-and-dice well, and can even shoot you with mind bullets if needed. Oh and the wings aren’t for show — they fly, too! If you’ve got a Tyranid army in need of an HQ, check out the Flyrant! Take one for a spin…hell, take 2!

T’au Commander

The T’au got a bunch of fancy new toys in the mix with the latest codex. But one unit that just keeps sticking around is the T’au Commander. And for good reason! They’ve got a loadout where they can essentially hop around from cover-to-cover and unleash devastating volleys of fire on unsuspecting units — all without needing to actually have Line of Sight. That’s HANDY! When your opponent can’t see you to shoot back, well, that’s the best sort of defense from shooting ever! It also helps that the Commander not a weakling either…but just let them do what they do best: Shoot, Shoot, SHOOT!

Space Marine Primaris Chaplain On Bike

The Primaris Chaplain on Bike isn’t exactly flashy. However, it’s just a good HQ option. They have a great statline for the points. They are tougher than normal, they have more wounds, they move quick, and hit hard enough to make heretics question their life choices. It’s a great combo of speed, durability, and damage potential all in one little package. And it doesn’t stop there…

These Chaplains are also really good HQs because they also Buff your army. You can speed around with your Litanies of Battle and buff other parts of your army. You can even make them a Warlord and give them even more options. Slap an artifact on them for even more pain. Chaplains might not be flashy but they are a fantastic HQ option because they are a total package.
