The new Fyreslayer codex is dropping this weekend, and the new subfactions are incredible. Let’s talk!

At long last, the naked warrior dwarves are getting an update to 3.0. This weekend, they will drop alongside the updated drippy aelves of the Idoneth Deepkin. The book provides a ton of new traits and artifacts, and even gives players the opportunity to make Gotrek benefit from ur-gold. As with the other updated books, we are also seeing updated versions of the four primary Lodges, and they’re incredible. Whatever army you want to play, one of the new sub-factions has what you want. Here’s a quick review of the new sub-faction rules, and how I think they’ll play on the battlefield.

Vostarg

This is the primary lodge of the Fyreslayers, and probably the one that comes to mind when you picture the red-headed war machines. They are aggressive, wickedly fast, and deadly on the assault, and only stop fighting when their enemy is a smear on the ground. On the tabletop, this lodge adds +1 to hit and wound rolls for Vulkite Berserkers that made a charge roll in the same turn. While this does kill the old Hearthguard spam lists, it plays more to theme and lore, and I really like it. With the updates to the Berserkers, that means 3 attacks that hit and wound on a 2+ on the charge, assuming you go dual axe (which you really should in this sub-faction).

Greyfyrd

A mercenary faction willing to sell their blades to anyone who can meet their price, even Chaos, the Greyfyrd are nonetheless a proud faction. They boast a long line of powerful heroes, and they are justly proud of the quality of their warriors. They prefer to meet the enemy on foot, preferring not to ride the massive Magmadroths of the other lodges. This translates on the tabletop as 2 extra wounds for all on foot heroes, and your army can bring 2 additional artifacts as long as they’re given to on-foot heroes. This will probably be the closest to the HGB spam list, thanks to the Retinue rule on the Runefather and Runeson.

Hermdar

They say the best offense is a good defense, and Hermdar agrees, but they also think that offense is a perfectly good offense. They are ferocious on the charge, and then just as deadly defending their gains from counterattack. When they free captives or discover ur-gold, they will defend them to their last breath, and their bravery is second-to-none. They can take Auric Hearthguard as battleline, and if a Hermdar unit wholly within enemy territory or 12″ of an objective fails a Battleshock test, half the models that flee, rounding up. This is great for snagging battle tactics and pushing your enemy off objectives through attrition.

Lofnir

The polar opposite of Greyfyrd, the pious Lofnir are the masters of beast rearing, and they have the largest concentration of Magmadroths of any lodge. More than that, the Magmadroths they raise are of exceptional quality, dwarfing the beasts of other lodges in both size and ferocity. They can take the deadly beasts as battleline, allowing the heroic Runesons to double as frontline troopers. In addition, all Magmadroths receive 2 extra wounds, and 3 of the mighty beasts can have mount traits instead of just 1. This allows a full army of bulked-up beasts, allowing you to smash through the enemy line with impunity.

Which lodge is your favorite?
