We’re spending some time with the family Madrigal this week and playing D&D with some characters from Encanto.

If you’ve managed to not watch Encanto by now, do yourself a favor and minimize this screen, go watch it, and come back. It’s been a year gifted with some really great animated movies, and Encanto was definitely one of the best. And definitely one of the few I’ve re-watched. Somehow I managed to not invite the Madrigals to play D&D when the movie first premiered. But after winning three Oscars there’s really no excuse. So this week we’re adding a few miracles to our next D&D session.

Mirabel Madrigal

Without any powers in the movie, Mirabel should be one of the harder characters to hammer out details for. But her endless support of everyone in her family being her power makes her a perfect candidate for a Bard. I went with College of Lore because she does “collect knowledge” about her family and turns out to be one of, if not the most honest members of her household.

As far as equipment and weapons go, Mirabel is pretty light on them. She doesn’t carry much, and weapons don’t seem her style or the way she wants to resolve problems. Of course, in a D&D campaign please give your character a weapon or two.

Spells were a bit tricky with her since in the movie she doesn’t have any magic powers of her own. Instead I opted for spells that hinged on charming people, making friends and influencing crowds. She effectively zone-of-truths so many of her family members. Either that, or they were just looking for an excuse to talk about Bruno.

Bruno, as it turns out, is incredibly straight forward. Not only does he have powers, but with School of Divination Wizards coming straight out of the Players Handbook, he may as well have been made for D&D. Fun, quirky personality? Sad backstory? Bruno’s already a D&D character.

While Mirabel was all charisma, that’s Bruno’s dump stat. His knowledge should be in high demand around town, but instead everybody’s scared of him and when he “leaves home” they don’t talk about it. And based on how bad he was at broaching anxiety and the weather with Pepa, it’s probably in some small part due to a total lack of ability to communicate.

There are a bunch of divination spells for wizards, and I honestly took most of them because most of them are fitting. He also has “find familiar” because he’s going to need all of his rat friends. And disguise self because he gets a kick out of pretending to be other people. So we’re doing him a favor and making him a little better at that one with a spell.

There are so many more Madrigals left, and all of them would fit into a Dungeons and Dragons sessions pretty well. Would you like to see the rest of the family eventually? Who’s powers would you most like to have? What game, movie, show, or comic should I make sheets from next? Let us know in the comments!
