So you want to get your hands on a Grey Knight Combat Patrol — but what should you get after that? Let’s chat.

The Grey Knight Combat Patrol is up for Pre-order this weekend. While it’s maybe not the best Combat Patrol deal out there it’s still got a lot of the units you’ll want in one convenient box. But let’s pretend that you’ve got that pre-order in and you want to grow your collection in the meantime (or after you get it). So what should you get next? That’s what we’re here to talk about today.

The good news is that most of the stuff in the box is going to be useful. And if you’re looking for some tips on playing the Grey Knights you can check out our How to Play series for that. From a very high level perspective the Grey Knights are an elite army. It’s actually one that can compete in the current environment. The downside is that because the army is relatively elite, you’re going to end up with a lot of the same units. So I hope okay will “spamming” units from the book.

Grey Knight Next Steps

With all that said what should you buy next? Well, to be perfectly blunt, you don’t have a lot of options. You could go with some off-meta options. But really you’re going to be limited to 3 real options:

Grey Knights Strike Squads

Nemesis Dreadknights

Grey Knight Terminator Squads

That’s really it. The good news is those kits can be built as various different versions but it’s really just the same kits. How you choose to build them will be what matters. For example the Grey Knight Strike Squad can be your core Troop option. It can also be built as a Grey Knight Interceptor Squad, a Grey Knight Purifier Squad or a Grey Knight Purgation Squad…1 box 4 options.

The Terminators are probably at the bottom of the list of things you should get next. Not because they are terrible but because you already got 5 from the Combat Patrol. If you want to run a bigger squad or more Terminators go for it.

The Dreadknight is going to be the second most important of the three options. You’ve already got 1 from the Combat Patrol so that’s a good start. Thankfully, that can be built as a “generic” Dreadknight or as a Grandmaster in a Dreadknight. Both options are good. You’ll probably want a Grandmaster version and at least 1 “generic” one in your collection. A lot of the competitive lists run 2 or 3.

The most important kits to get your hands on will be the Grey Knight Strike Squads. You’re probably going to want 2-3 boxes of those. The good news is they should be readily available from anywhere you can buy Warhammer kits.

Another Combat Patrol Box?

Buying a second Combat Patrol box isn’t a terrible idea. You’ll get the other 5 members of the Strike Squad, another 5 Terminators (which is all you’re probably ever going to need), and a second Dreadknight. The second Librarian is…okay. It’s maybe not the most efficient use of your hobby dollars but all together it’s still cheaper than buying everything individually. Also, the Terminator Librarian can be used as a generic Space Marine Terminator Librarian…so there’s that option.

At this point you might be wondering about Special Characters. The cool thing is Grey Knights do have a fun selection of them. There’s only a handful of them, too. Castellan Crowe is getting a new model which you can also Pre-order this weekend. Then there’s Lord Kaldor Draigo who’s legendary. Grand Master Voldus isn’t too bad, either.

Castellan Crowe

Personally, I think adding a character really comes down to personal preference and theme. So do what you want with those options.

Grey Knight Accessories

Finally, the last thing to consider are the extras. You did get a Codex, right? Don’t forget about the Cards as they can be useful for keeping everything straight while you’re playing. Are the cards needed? No — but they are a nice to have.

What about Dreadnoughts and transports for the army? That’s kind of up to you and what you want to do. In the more competitive lists you don’t really see them as much. Which is why we’re including them at the bottom. They are pretty low priority.

The long and short of it is that if you prioritize snagging some more Strike Squad Boxes and Dreadknights to your Grey Knight collection you’re going to be doing just fine.

We hope this helps with planning out your Grey Knight Army next steps. How are you going to expand your collection from Combat Patrol to a full army?
