Let’s take a look at a unit that you shouldn’t gaze at too much – Harlequin Voidweavers.

In the ever-shifting meta of 40K,  Armies rise and fall. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about armies that are hot or not, but a lot less time looking at units that are running the show. Today let’s start by taking a look at one of the hottest units currently running around the tabletop.

The Unit

Voidweavers are a Harlequin light attack vehicle. Fast and agile, these deadly attack craft serve the Laughing God. With a mix of strong defensive abilities and deadly guns, they fill a mid range ranged attack role, and double up as anti-armor.

Why Are Voidweavers Good?

Voidweavers fall into a category of units that have seen a lot of success in the 9th Meta, light vehicle hordes. Their base stats are pretty par for the course here, T5, 6 Wounds, 4+ save and BS 3 being the important ones. Overall these are actually a little lower than some of the other units that have filled this role. A 14 inch move and fly does make them faster than some others. Unlike most units that have seen success in this role, they don’t have a -1 to damage. Instead, they thrive on not getting hit. A 4++ save makes them pretty hard to damage. Mirage Launchers give enemies a -1 to hit them and doesn’t allow re-rolls, making it hard to land a hit. These combined make them a lot harder to kill than the base stats suggest.

Weapons-wise they are also super deadly, in the same vein as most new things in 40K. Two of the recently upgraded Shuriken Cannons give them adequate firepower vs MEQ or other light tanks. Their Haywire Cannon is a strong gun for taking down heavy infantry and vehicles. With 2s3 shots and blast, it puts out a lot of damage. S4, Ap-3 and D3 make it strong for mowing down enemies. The option to wound all vehicles on a 4+ and get mortal wounds on a 6 makes it extra deadly. If you don’t want the Haywire, the Prismatic Cannon is also a great gun. Longer ranged and with one mode that can mow down hordes and another that tackles heavy armor it’s deadly. A single Voidwaver can put out up to 15 shots, and take down, a MEQ unit or heavy armor. Coming in units of 1-3 you can pack a lot of them in a list.

A Sample List

Saying a unit is hot is all well and good, but let’s take a look at how players are using it. Voidwavers has been in a number of lists that have done well at recent tournaments. One list that uses them is the following run by Zack Point for a top place finish at the 2022 Adepticon GT.

Using Voidweavers

Zack’s list makes maximum use of Voidweavers running 3 units of 3 (as did a lot of other lists at the event). Armed with Prismatic Cannons each one of these 9 can put out a lot of firepower. Four Starweaver transports join the Voidweavers to make a massive block of fast deadly vehicles that can rush around the table at will. To up the durability of the Voidweavers, Zack runs them as Light Seadeth. This means most of the time even elite units like Custodies are hitting them a 4+ at best. A unit that can avoid half the attacks pointed its way, and then make half their saves is really hard to bring down. With some elite Troupes to mop up enemies in close combat and tie-down threats, this block of flying death can clear enemy armies off the table with ease (and did).
