Wizards of the Coast releases a big Heroes of Krynn update with an all new Unearthed Arcana. Come and see what’s changed.

In the wake of a big new Dragonlance announcement comes another bit of Krynn-centric news. The Heroes of Krynn Unearthed Arcana gets a big update this week. WotC announced yesterday that they revised the latest batch of content. What’s in the update? Backgrounds have been adjusted. Now everyone gets a bonus feat (two, actually), which feels really good. On top of that, Kenders have been tweaked, as well as the Feats of Krynn.

Let’s take a look at what’s new in the Heroes of Krynn.

Heroes of Krynn Update – Overview

In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we continue our exploration of character options from the Dragonlance setting. After studying your feedback, we’ve revised the kender race, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and several feats for characters from the world of Krynn. You can find this new Dungeons & Dragons playtest material in the PDF below.

The Lunar Magic subclass that appeared in our previous Heroes of Krynn article scored so well that it is moving forward in our development process and doesn’t appear here.

Good news for your Lunar Magic sorcerers. Your celestial spells will stay the way they are. But the new backgrounds and feats will show us what’s different.

Dragonlance Feats

For starters, everyone in Krynn gets a bonus feat. Per the Unearthed Arcana:

“Whatever background you choose for your War of the Lance character, you gain bonus feats, as detailed below. Characters involved in this conflict are forced into remarkable situations and changed by their experiences.”

According to the developers, the experience of the war changes you. And this means that all War of the Lance characters now gain a bonus feat at 1st and 4th level. Players who select the Knight of Solamnia or Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds get a feat as specified, but even if you pick a background out of the Player’s Handbook you still get a bonus feat. Albeit you have to pick from a list:

  • Divinely Favored
  • Skilled
  • Tough

The Heroes of Krynn Update changes divinely favored.

Divinely Favored is a feat introduced in Heroes of Krynn, which represents your character having a spark of divine power. It’s a lot like Magic Initiate – the feat gives you a Cleric cantrip, a 1st level spell from the Warlock, Cleric, or Druid lists depending on whether you’re evil, good, or neutral, respectively, and you also can cast augury once per day without a spell slot.

At 4th level, everyone gets another round of feats:

  • Adept of the Black Robes/Red Robes/White Robes
  • Alert
  • Knight of the Crown/Rose/Sword
  • Mobile
  • Sentinel
  • War Caster

Additionally the feats have been revised. The Adept of the Robes feats have been buffed slightly. Their “when casting a spell” effects have been buffed slightly. Adepts of the Black Robes will do more damage, Red Robes gain a slightly better spell list, and White Robes have a more powerful protective ward.

But better still are the various Solamnian Knight feats. Each of these feats now gives access to a number of Battlemaster Maneuvers. Knights of the Crown get Distracting Strike and Goading Attack. While Knights of the Sword get Maneuvering and Menacing Attack. And Knights of the Rose get Commander’s Strike and Rally. Each of these builds off of Squire of Solamnia which gives you a selection of maneuvers at a d6 superiority die. The Knight feats upgrade this to a d8.

Heroes of Krynn Update – Improved Kenders

Feats aren’t the only things that get an improvement in the new Unearthed Arcana, though. Alongside the new feats, the Kender gets an update.

WotC updated Kender. Now they lose the ability to gain a random item. Instead they get a bonus proficiency owing to their mystical curiosity. And Kender Taunt now works off of a choice between Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma–and creatures get to ignore the penalty when attacking you. Making the taunt effective as a taunt.

See the rest of the changes for yourself

Happy Adventuring!
