The Salamanders are under the spotlight today from Games Workshop. How will these mean green marines work on the tabletop? Let’s find out!

It’s time to kick the tires and light some fires because the Salamanders are here. When it’s time to unleash the burnination no other Legion does it better. So how will these master craftsmen handle the heat? GW has some rules previews to showcase what they can do during the Horus Heresy Era.

“The Salamanders’ home is a volcanic death world, eternally locked in a cycle of tidal upheavals that cause fire to literally rain from the sky. Not exactly a prime holiday destination. You need more than sun cream to survive on Nocturne, and the XVII Legion’s gene-seed only intensifies this Blood of Fire, giving each Salamander a preternatural resistance to flames. And microwaves. And superheated plasma. And Martian death rays.”

Blood of Fire sure makes the Salamanders a whole lot tougher against the multitude of special weapons. First off, let’s just talk about that -1 to the To Wound roll. It doesn’t impact the actual strength of the attack — it just drops the To Wound by 1 which is massive. Vehicles with Hull Points are even harder targets now and that’s kind of scary! On top of that, every model with this rule that has more than 1 wound (or Hull Point) also has the It Will Not Die (6+) ability which is also very handy.

The Salamanders are also famous for their use of flamers. And looking at their special armory of Dragon’s Breath weapons it’s easy to see why. First off, all these weapons have the Dragon’s Breath rule. That nets them a D6 instead of a D3 number of attacks when using the Wall of Death special rule.

But on top of that each of these weapons also packs on some extra AP and/or Strength compared to their counterparts from other Legions. Depending on which end of the flamer you’re on you might glad it’s AP 4 or you might be bummed it’s “only” AP 4. Still, with that many attacks, you’ll have the targets sweating in their Power Armor.
