Warhammer 40K: This Week’s Meta Hotness – Lord Discordant

The good ole standby Lord Discordant made a showing this past week with an event that ran the new Balance Dataslate.  The Lord Discordant was one of those nutty modelswho come back around!

In the ever-shifting meta of 40K, armies rise and fall. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about armies that are hot or not, but a lot less time looking at units that are running the show. Today let’s start by taking a look at one of the hottest units currently running around the tabletop.

Lord Discordant Basics

Look there is another unit that got a good bump from the Dataslate.  Here you have an Assault Monster in the Lord Discordant.  A Daemon Engine with a lot of attacks, an Aura that benefits other Daemon Engine, and a 2+ armor save. Plus a really powerful set of attributes makes this a unit that always skated the edge of being good in the current environment.  I get the feeling whenever the new CSM book this might be a staple again. But for now this guy does a whole lot of old interactions in the 9th environment.  CSM is one of the few armies left that really likes to Soup with its other evil buddies. So you can stack Chaos Daemon Auras (advance and charge Slaanesh friends), getting true reroll 1’s for everyone (CSM & CD Daemon Princes), and gaining our Legion traits on top of being a monster of doom.

Why Are Lord Discordant’s Any Good?

The Chaos Space Marines like to assault and this model does it well.  It has a ton of attacks, hits on a 2+, is very fast, and tough as well.  Throw in a Master of Possession to help boost their Invulnerable save and some other daemon friends gives you a murder ball.  Beyond the list below another monster mash used 2 of these guys with Mortarion, Be’lakor, and 2 Keepers of Secrets to play an army designed to put the opponent on their back foot.  I think these guys are going to be rough with their new book so be prepared to fight thru the tentacle waves of creepy mechanical jerks.

Saying a unit is hot is all well and good, but let’s take a look at how players are using it. One list that uses the Lord Discordant run by Dean Sinnbeck at the Rataclysm 2022.

Using a Lord Discordant

As you can see the Lord Discordant in this list was used as a boost engine to help the Decimators (secretly decent from FW) to move up, hit on 2’s, and throw out a lot of mortal wounds without needing psychic spells.  The rest of the army is utilizing a couple good bricks of Terminators and the Lord Discordant to sit behind, move up as needed, and bully the enemy.  Emperor’s Children are looking to be strong if rumors are true so we’ll start complaining about CSM being too good in a few months.
