D&D gets even more digital as Roll20 and DMs Guild team up for even more online support. All your favorites, now virtual and official.

Roll20 and DMs Guild parent organization OneBookShelf announced yesterday that they’re teaming up to bring all that sweet sweet extra 5E goodness to Roll20’s wide-reaching virtual tabletop.

Dungeons & Dragons gets ever more digital. The DMs Guild, if you’re unfamiliar, is WotCs official “community content program.”

The DMs Guild is where you’ll find a number of amazing creations by your fellow players and DMs. There’s a full spectrum of stuff on there, from professional-quality adventure modules, to lists of NPCs or lair actions. Often these have thousands of copies sold.

And Roll20 is the biggest virtual tabletop, according to user data. So bringing the two together is a pretty big deal.

Roll20 and DMs Guild Team Up

In a nutshell, both platforms will soon get some new tools. Per their announcement:

DMsGuild creators will soon be able to create Roll20 content in the form of modules and add-ons that will unlock for users with the purchase of their DMsGuild adventure content, providing additional value for online play. Roll20 users will be able to access those maps and handouts available from DMsGuild in the virtual tabletop without additional set-up work.

Roll20 and DMs Guild’s team up means that you’ll be able to grab your favorite module and drop it right into Roll20. Of course there’s a little bit of an extra step for creators now. They’ll have to actually make the Roll20 modules, for instance. And while the experience is user-friendly, it still takes some doing.

But it opens up the doors to a much wider audience. Now a designer could add Dynamic Lighting and fog of war to their module. Or any of Roll20’s other amazing features that keep the community in the millions of active users.

As of 2022 a significant portion of D&D play is all virtual.

And more and more we’re seeing how D&D is adapting to the digital future for tabletop RPGs. As more and more games go online, the experience gets smoother and smoother. But one thing remains at the heart of all of these programs. It’s ultimately, all about the players. And coming together to tell stories, slay monsters, and have fun.
