‘One Piece’ Live-Action Adaptation Reveals Huge Sets During Netflix Geeked Week
The cast and crew of the upcoming live-action One Piece series reveals the massive scale of some of the show’s sets and ships.
The next of Netflix’s live action anime adaptations is getting a lot of buzz this week as the cast and crew of One Piece reveal some of the huge set pieces and builds.
Massive Pirate Ship Builds
The cast and crew sent a clip from where they’re filming in South Africa. Iñaki Godoy plays Monkey D. Luffy himself, plus showrunners Steve Maeda and Matt Owens introduce a two-minute clip featuring their massive sets. It shows the transition from concept art to giant wooden structures in process. And these images are overlayed with commentary on how original and great Oda’s world is and how much they love the source material and want it to look right. Every set takes a lot of time to build – some many weeks to get just so. This is one of those projects where fans are making a project for other fans. Which gives me a lot of hope for live action One Piece.
The sets include the Miss Love Duck, Baratie, and of course the Going Merry. And yes, those are all names of some of the most ridicules ships you may ever see actually built. While the ships are based on cartoon silliness, they’re recreated in away that almost adds some realism to the series and looks so much more like real ships than you’d think. While, of course, retaining that One Piece ridiculousness.
Live-Action One Piece
The cast includes Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. A few key members of the crew are missing from this lineup. So the Netflix series will likely take place in the early parts of the manga. Netflix will be exclusively streaming this ten-episode series.
Tomorrow Studios (2021’s Cowboy Bebop) is producing this project. Steve Maeda (The X-Files) is the show’s executive producer as well as showrunner, Marty Adelstein (Prison Break, Teen Wolf) as producer, and Matt Owens (Agents of Shield, Luke Cage) as the show’s writer. But perhaps most impressive is One Piece creator and manga-ka himself, Eiichiro Oda, is an executive producer. And has seemingly enthusiastically signed off on everything we’ve seen so far.
At this point I’ve watched this video at least five times, and I have so say I’m impressed so far. Goody seems to have the perfect energy to play Luffy, and it’s clear that the showrunners have a lot of love and respect for Oda’s work. But it is a Netflix show, so I’m not going to get too attached to the concept of seeing Nico Robin in live action just yet.
