Four new Rings of Power covers featuring photos Elves, Dwarves, Harfoots and Troll art were revealed by Empire this morning.

Ever since Amazon picked up the rights to make a Lord of the Rings show, we’ve been watching it intensely. So far the show looks great. However some elements of plot, little known at best, have stirred worry.

We’ve haven’t seen a whole ton of images from the show. Now Empire magazine is helping to revel some of what is to come in September. The four covers give us another glimpse at the Second age of Middle Earth, and what we might expect from the show.

Cover #1

The first cover, “The Elves” features Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel. This is a far more badass and combat ready version than we got in the Peter Jackson movies. This Galadriel is ready to kick some Orc butt. Gone are flowing robes, replaced by mail and plate armor. I do wonder if her mail is mithril. She seems to partially covered in blood, which suggests the armor isn’t just for looks. It seems she sees some action.

I also really dig her sword. It clearly follows the design of the Elven blades from Jackson’s LoTR, but is its own weapon. Overall this is an elf that looks ready to get dirty. It’s also interesting that the Elves, normally depicted as a more peaceful or enlighten race, are the ones shown ready to fight and covered in blood. The 2nd Age was wild y’all.

Cover #2

Cover number 2 is “The Dwarves”. On it, we find Dwarf Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur) and Princess Disa (Sophia Nomvete). While Durin IV has been mentioned before, neither are characters we really know anything about. What is intriguing is that we know Durin IV was a Prince of Khazad-dum and the cover implies we will see more of that city. Khazad-dum, better known as the Mines of Moria, was the ancient Dwarf capital.

I’m pretty excited to get to see it in all its glory. With the expectation of some flashbacks and the opening of the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey we only really see Dwarves after the fall of much of their civilization. The loss of Khazad-dum, the wars with the goblins and later the loss of Erebor broke the Dwarven people. In the Lord of the Rings, they’re important, but a mere shadow of themselves. In the Rings of Power we should be seeing them at their height. It might be a short height, but I’m exited to see it.

Cover # 3

Cover three is “the Harfoots”. It features Megan Richards’ Poppy Proudfellow, Markella Kavenagh’s Elanor ‘Nori’ Brandyfoot, and Lenny Henry’s Sadoc Burrows. The Harfoots are kind of Proto-Hobbits. They’ve got even stranger feet it looks like. To be honest I’m kind of iffy about their inclusion in the show.

Part of Hobbits whole deal was that no one knew about them. They were secluded. Somehow tying their ancestors into the major events of the Second Age seems odd and to diminish that a bit. But we will see. I do like the look they’ve gone with. If LoTR Hobbits are classic English country folk, then the Rings of Power Harfoots are classic English medieval peasants.

Cover #4

Lastly the fourth cover is a subscriber cover. It’s got some concept art for a snow troll on it. Not much to say here. It’s a troll. It looks cool. It will never top cave trolls among the fandom.

Let us know if these covers will help you hang on until the show comes out!
