The Ironhead Squat Prospectors are our first look at the Squat Squad Redesign in the 40k Universe. How do they stack up?

By now you’ve probably seen the Leagues of Votann and the Squads of the Kin. We’re hyped about them and are looking forward to seeing them. In the meantime we’ve got our hands on the a splinter group that has been surviving (and thriving) on the harsh surface of Necromunda.

Unboxing The Ironhead Squat Prospectors

One of the first things to note about this box of “gangers” is that it contains enough parts to make 8 models. This is different that most of the other Gangs as they typically have 10 models per box. It’s not really a deal breaker but it is noteworthy.

One more thing that is a very subtle difference is the bases that are provided for the Ironhead Squat Prospectors. Like the Ash Waste Nomads, these Gangers don’t come with the Imperial Industrial bases. These are just plain bases…but they are not the same 25mm you might be expecting. They are actually a new size which is a Citadel 28.5mm Round Base. This is…odd. But again, noteworthy.

In the box you’ll end up with two copies of this spure. It’s pretty straightforward and includes a ton of weapon options — that means you should end up with lots of extras. As mentioned, you can build 8 Gangers from these bits and that includes either a Charter Master and a Drill Master along with the 6 other Gangers.

The neat part about this Gang being so compact on the sprue is that you can really bring some serious firepower with them. You’ll need to get their rules in the Book of the Outlands but they pack a punch!

Building them was a breeze as well. They fit together extremely well and you can tell this is a “fresh run” on the sprue molds. It’s also interesting to point out their helms can be built with the visor or the full mask. Also, as long as you pair the gun arms up correctly, you shouldn’t have any issues with the two-handed larger gun assembly.

The Ironhead Squat Prospectors might not be the first Squats from Necromunda we’ve had and they sure aren’t going to be the only ones. However, based on these models, GW has done a great job of getting the “squat” scale right in 40k. This is a good sign for the Leagues of Votann models coming from them later on. I can’t wait to see how those models will stand next to these Prospectors!
