Warhammer 40K Hot Mess – Wyrdvane Psykers

Let’s take a deep dive into a hot mess of a 40K unit and some thoughts in how we can fix them up. What do you even do Wyrdvane psykers?

Astra Militarum are just a weird army right now.  They got some buffs in the dataslate but they feel like they just don’t work.  I have heard chatter they are getting worked on but right now it is just a weird day to be an AM player right now.  You got a lot of cool tanks but are those tanks good enough to carry you through the day?  Are you just waiting for a Hammerhead to shove a rail bullet in your face?  But we are not talking about tanks today – no instead lets talk about Wyrdvane Psykers.  Man is that name dumb.  I guess it isn’t Murderface Blood Monster Pyskers but really what is the point of this unit?

I remember when they were the cornerstone of the Leaf Blower list by causing your unit to get super scared and run off the table.  The glory days of leadership issues that have somehow come back to Horus Heresy.  The bygone days of getting a little bit spooked and your awesome unit would high tail it off the battlefield edge.

Wyrdvane Psykers

This is a gang of creepy Imperium Psykers that haven’t been fed to the Emperor yet.  These guys look like they are constantly scared of being asked to do something important on the battlefield.  They are holding their heads in their hands, have to carry this goofy staff, and hang out with other guys who are worried about the same thing.  You can get them in units of 3-9 and they can cast one spell and deny a spell but only with a 1d6+1 or +2 if it has more than 3 models.  Now you can get them to cast Psychic Barrier. But as they are a unit and not a Character they will most likely get shot off the table.  There are a ton of other cheap psyker options in the AM book so what is the point of these jerks?

Why Not Make Them Unique?

Let’s make this unit unique.  Something like you purchase this unit and they all can go into troop units as a pseudo upgrade.  Adding in some psychic options to units and let them become a bit different.  This way you could limit would spells they have but still make this dirty dozen feel to the Imperial Guard.

Create Their Own Psychic Discipline.

They shouldn’t just be copies of the Psykana one and make them unique.  They could be like battle harden soldiers with spells that fit them.  Something that would add up in the unit and help their buddies hit better, hit harder, and maybe survive a bit longer to write a letter home.

Maybe Create a Unique Unit of Them.

Why not just have the model become part of a Court-like unit.  You could have the psyker, a chaplain like option, medic, and other things inside this cool and unique unit.  This could be something neat and let you do some kind of interesting options that are not just a retinue or gaggle of Veterans who hang around with their hero.  Maybe you might create something where the guys could have a cool nickname like Shakes due to always hearing the whispering in the warp.

Just Make Them Neat

It is a pretty cool model and something that could easily be made into plastic. I love the idea of different little mini heroes to add to units and these guys would be perfect.  A nice small bump that just makes building a cool unit neat.  Attach this to a Killteam release or at the very least with Dark Tide and the little mini caster in there.

Let us know how you would fix the unit, down in the comments!
