Warhammer 40K: What to Expect from Angron?

Angron is returning to the battlefield in Warhammer 40,000, lets’s take a look at what to expect.

Last week, after some leaked images came out, GW officially confirmed that Angron was coming to the 40K tabletop. Only a few weeks ago Adam was hatching conspiracy theories about the Red Angel’s return, and now here he is. His return is pretty big news, and with a stunning model he promises to shake up the tabletop. With his big feet if nothing else! Let us take a little look at what his return means for the game.

Who Even Is Angron?

Angron during the Horus Heresy

Let’s start with the basics: Angron is the Primarch of the World Eaters. Post-Heresy he turned into a Daemon Prince/Primarch. He was also banished back to the warp for a hundred years and a day. But that was during the First War of Armageddon which conically happened in 444 M41. The Great Rift happened during 999 M41 — during the 13th Black Crusade. That’s well over the “hundred years and a day” warp banishment that Angron received.

So, we know that he’s “Free” from this imprisonment. We also know that he’s been active behind the scenes — at least in the Chaos Codexes that mention him and his brother Fulgrim. Sure, these are mostly just in passing and are meant as nods to their existence. But that means they DO exist. He is by far the angriest of the Primarchs and currently the least rational.

What To Expect From Angron

Angron is a real chonky boy and he looks ready to mess things up on the table too. But what can we expect for his stats? Well, while we can’t know 100% we have some pretty good guesses. Angron is effectively a cross between a Bloodthirster and a Primarch. Both of these are things we already have rules for so some sort of mix between their stats makes sense. I think we can expect a pretty fast model, with at least a 12 inch move thanks to his wings. Given that he is all about getting close and personal, I don’t think we will see a ranged weapon. If there is one it will be very close 3″-6″ kind of range. I’d guess he will have an option to attack either with his sword or axe and that his tail will give him extra attacks.

I’d also expect him to be pretty tough to kill. Angron wears a lot of armor and we are likely looking at the kind of common “hard to kill” stuff, with either or 2+ or 3+ save paired with a 4++. The real question for me is if he will have a limit on how many wounds he can take in a phase. Since none of the other Deamon Primarchs have this rule, I’m guessing he won’t either. GW has rightly decided that 18 wounds are too many to combine with this rule.

How Bout Them Special Rules?

We can also guess a bit at some of his special rules. Likely he will have the standard Primarch rules, giving friendly World Eaters  a re-roll on a ones to hit and picking a unit to re-roll full hits. His Nucerian warplate will like give him an invulnerable save. But what about other special rules. Well, both Khrone and Angron really don’t like pyskers. I’m guessing Angron, and World Eaters in general, are going to have some anti-psyker protection rules. It could just be the whole 5+ save vs mortal wounds from psychc powers, or it could be something more.

I think we should also expect something from the Butcher’s Nails. This is likely to buff his damage output. Maybe he will fight twice, or maybe it will just give him attacks. I could see something with him getting more attacks as the game goes on and as the Nails rile him up. Given who and what he is, I’d also like to see some sort of aura that makes people around him angry, kind of like Scarbrand. Since he doesn’t get psychic powers himself, he will need something to make up the power difference between him and his brother Primarchs. This will likely be raw damage output. I’d honestly expect that Angron could be the deadliest model in close combat in the game. As he should be.

Let us know what you think Angron will do, down in the comments!
