Warhammer: 5 Tomb Kings Units That Should Get Reborn

I never thought I’d say it, but I kinda miss the Tomb Kings. Here’s a few units that should get added back to Age of Sigmar.

The Tomb Kings are an army from the Old World. They were the “Dry” Undead with the sun bleached skeletons and mummy wrapped leaders. They had different play style compared to the “Wet” Undead of the Vampire Counts. They were the army that we got heroes like Nagash, Arkhan, and Settra from — as well as a host of other characters. But when the Old World ended the didn’t exactly make the jump to the new vision of the game.

Now, I know a lot of folks are going to make the comparison between the new Ossiarch Bonereapers and the Tomb Kings. “The OBR are just a revamp of the Tomb Kings!” I hear you. And while aesthetically they are similar, they don’t play the same.

Well, mostly not the same.

There’s a few units from the Tomb Kings that didn’t make the jump and those are the ones we want to focus on. Could they be added to the Ossiarch Bonereapers? Honestly, with some new rules and models, it’s entirely possible. It would be a delicate balance of adding these old units without making the OBR play like Tomb Kings. Then again, the game is different and the army rules of OBR already make them play different. So…maybe reimagining these old units back into the Ossiarch Bonereapers wouldn’t be so bad afterall.

Bring Back These Tomb Kings Units

Bone Giant

I know we have some pretty awesome Sons of Behemat Giants that can be used as mercenaries in other armies. But those giants do die, right? And those bones have to be valuable to the likes of the Ossiarch Bonereapers. Lorewise, it should be entirely possible. But what I’d be more excited about is seeing what GW could do with a modern Mega-Gargant as a freakin’ Skeleton! That would be amazing.

Necrosphinx/Warsphinx

Of all the Tomb King units, this one going bye-bye really made me sad. It was and still is a wonderful looking model and it was one of those models that I wish that GW had found a way to reincorporate into the Mortal Realms. It’s just so freaking GOOD. I’m kind of kicking myself for not getting one (or two) at the time and just figuring out what to use them for later. Here’s hoping GW reproduces the Necrosphinx for something in the future.

Tomb Scorpion

Could you make the case that the Tomb Scorpion is already in the Ossiarch Bonereapers army? The Gothizzar Harvester is kinda like one? If we’re just looking at the surface level details…it’s got hooks for hands and a tail…

But, functionally, these two units are completely different. The Harvester is a force multiplier/unit regenerator. It’s suppose to be in the front lines helping your units come back. The Tomb Scorpion was a sneaky suprise attacker that would pop-up from behind and charge in there. It’s also a giant freakin necro-scorpion. Imagine GW redoing that model!

Skeleton Chariots / Skeleton Archers

I’m lumping these two iconic units together because, combined, they really stand out as to what made the Tomb Kings so different as an army. Not just different from “Wet” Undead (because they had chariots and archers) but also different from the Ossiarch Bonereapers in the Mortal Realms. The OBR might have Kavalos units as skeletal cavalry but they don’t have Chariots. They also don’t have a unit of archers (yet).

We got one…just need a full unit box.

They also don’t have mounted archers which was another variation from the Tomb Kings. The point is that if GW wanted to reimagine and update these units they are well on their way at this point.

Ushabti

I know I’ve got a few ranged units on here, but I’m looking specifically at the Ushabti ranged unit version of these Tomb Kings. We already got the Necropolis Stalkers in place of their melee versions. Now picture those 4-armed fellows with bows. It could get a little crazy is what I’m getting at!

The Tomb Kings had lots more units in their army. Maybe one day we’ll see the rest of them rejoin the Mortal Realms.
