Wizards of the Coast has launched yet another game studio, in Austin, TX no less. Skeleton Key Games is here.

Announced just this week, WotC opened doors on another game dev studio, Skeleton Key Games. Skeleton Key will be producing “triple-A” titles for WotC, though it’s unclear exactly what they’ll be making.

This is at least the fourth in a suite of North American game studios owned by WotC, including Atomic Arcade, Tuque Games, and the other studio owned by WotC, based in Austin, headed by an ex-BioWare developer: Archetype Entertainment.

Whatever their ultimate goal, it seems that WotC is pursuing gaming heavily. After a record earnings call for the past quarter, details have emerged about their plans to spin up even more investment in “digital entertainment.”

With a new president, Cynthia Williams, formerly of Xbox and Amazon, it seems WotC’s digital directive is starting to take shape.

And that direction includes a lot of BioWare folks. Per WotC’s announcement, Christian Dailey, former Executive Producer for the Dragon Age franchise, will be heading up the studio. As WotC president Williams put it:

“We are thrilled to continue to build our roster of exceptionally talented digital gaming leaders and welcome Christian to the team. We will greatly benefit from the experience that this team and new video game studio bring to Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro.”

Dailey expressed excitement about the role:

“I am excited to be starting this new adventure with the company that has created so many of my favorite toys and games growing up. Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have been a huge influence on me, their brands have inspired my pursuit of a lifelong career in video games.”

According to the studio’s new site, its mission is to “creative immersive gameplay, unique stories, and thought-provoking moments of suspense and horror that guide players to have fun while facing their fears.”

It’s early days yet. But WotC and Skeleton Key will surely have more in the coming weeks.
