‘Highlander’ Reboot is Still in the Works – Apparently “There Can’t Be Only One”

Last year a Highlander reboot was announced. It’s still in the works and director Chad Stahelski has shared a bit about what’s going on with it.

The 1986 movie starring Christopher Lambert (as a person that talks kind of), Sean Connery (as the most Scottish Spaniard in cinema), and Clancy Brown (as The Kurgan) as quasi-immortal beings fighting for dominance has become a cult classic. I’m sure all of us reading this have made a joke using its famous tagline. It spawned four questionable sequels (especially that last one) and three separate tv series.

It’s been 15 years since the fifth movie came out – it’s been long enough to reboot the universe.

A new movie has been floating around for a bit (Ryan Reynolds was attached at one point), but it seems that pieces are starting to fall into place and we may actually get to see it. The movie’s story is unknown at this point. It could be a pure re-make or it could be using the universe to create a new story.

Casting isn’t settled, but it’s been reported that Henry Cavill is in the running. Having an actor like Cavill that looks the part and can wield a sword would be amazing. Look at him, he belongs in this franchise.

What we do know is that John Wick creator/director Chad Stahelski is attached. He recently spoke to Collider about what stage the project is in – and confirmed that, yes, it’s still being worked on.

“We’re in the process of tweaking right now. I think we know what we want. More importantly than anything, we know what we want to make. It’s in the creatives. We know what we’re trying to make. It’s just a matter of getting it to the point where we feel, ‘Okay, this is it. Let’s go.’ But we’re closer than we’ve ever been, so that’s good.”

The director has spoken with Cavill about the role and thinks he’d be perfect, but nothing is solid yet.

“It’s not just about muscles and brooding. I think he’s got an incredible range and I think he’d bring something very special. And his enthusiasm has been amazing in it.”

I’ll get more excited when it’s fully confirmed, but it’s good to know that it hasn’t been shelved given the current environment. It has the potential to be a fun summer action movie with some awesome sword fights (sadly, without Bob Anderson) and some drama mixed in. It’s been long enough that revisiting the Gathering isn’t a bad thing, and it’s not an off-the-wall choice like Road House.

If you’ve never seen it, you can check out the movie that started it all on HBOMax and a bunch of other streamers right now.
