‘One Piece Red’ Anime Opens in Japan at Number One Spot
Straw Hat Luffy and One Piece Red saw success with a top-ranking opening weekend at the Japanese box office.
One Piece Red is the latest addition to the Straw Hat saga, and it easily took the number one spot in the Japanese box offices when it opened up last week.

The movie sold 1.58 million tickets and raked in 2.254 billion yet- or about $16.7 million US- in just its first two days. This is nearly an eight percent increase over the last movie’s opening weekend. These numbers don’t threaten the throne of Demon Slayer Mugen Train‘s ¥4.623 billion opening weekend. But it’s safe to say that the Straw Hats and their fans are more than happy to make themselves known at the box office.
In addition to twenty-seven IMAX screenings across Japan, One Piece Red saw MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Atmos screenings across the country. And according to Google, people are overwhelmingly happy with this film.

Sadly, for those of us in the North American audience, One Piece Red won’t be available to watch for another few weeks yet. Crunchyroll will be bringing the film to theaters in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand this fall with a US theatrical opening on August 6th. The movie will be available in Japanese with subtitled and dubbed in English.

One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy in his quest to find the legendary “one-piece” treasure and become king of the pirates. Along the way, he collects a ship, crew members, friends, and rivals. Since the manga’s first issue in 1997, it has enjoyed a huge amount of popularity.
More than a thousand manga chapters and anime episodes each have sold millions of copies. Recently Oda beat his own 2015 Guinness World Record for “the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author.”
In addition to the wildly popular manga and anime, One Piece has a number of feature films- some original, some condensed versions of TV show arcs- video games, and an upcoming live-action series for Netflix that we are cautiously optimistic about.
