In a move as close to full-circle as it gets, The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying, will bring Middle Earth D&D 5E.

At Gen Con 2022, Free League announced Lord of the Rings Roleplaying a 5th Edition adaptation of the popular The One Ring RPG.

It’s a move that brings Middle Earth to D&D. There’s a kind of irony in the fantasy world that helped inspire D&D now getting adapted into its rules. But Free League has promised to keep Middle Earth at the heart of this adaptation.

Free League Announces Lord of the Rings Roleplaying

The new edition of The One Ring™ RPG, set in the world of The Lord of the Rings™ by J.R.R. Tolkien and designed by Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi, became the most successful tabletop roleplaying core game ever on Kickstarter when it ended March 4, 2021. Now the time has come to open Middle-earth for even more roleplayers with a brand new 5E adaptation.

The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying contains everything you need to create exciting 5E adventures set in the world’s most popular fantasy setting: six original heroic cultures from the land of Eriador, six new classes, a host of terrifying adversaries, and comprehensive rules for journeys, councils, wondrous artefacts, and the subtle magic of Middle-earth.

So in the new setting you can get six new classes. Six new cultures. There’s going to be a lot here to look forward to. One of the biggest things in The One Ring are the rules for heroic journeys and heroic councils.

It’ll be interesting to see how Free League manages the lower, subtler magic of Middle-earth with the spell levels and very mechanical magic of D&D 5E. But In The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying we’ll surely see how it all shakes out.

Releasing alongside the book is a pre-generated adventure. Titled, Shire Adventure, the adventure will take you through familiar grounds by way of introduction.
