In the first Wednesday trailer the homicidal pre-teen starts at a new school and discovers an uncanny mystery laying under the surface.

The look and feel of the show is based on the original cartoons by Charles Addams rather than a continuation of the movies that came out in the 1990s or the TV show that aired in the ’60s. The family has always meant to be in opposition to the norm. Since their debut in 1938, the aristocratic family of macabre weirdos has shown fans that being different is admirable. And that marriages don’t have to be miserable.

Wednesday First Trailer

Tim Burton is bringing the family back to the small screen with a focus on the Addams’ homicidal daughter, Wednesday. After being expelled from multiple ‘normal’ schools, she’s admitted to one more fitting. A school that holds a mystery for the cynical pre-teen. Our fist look starts with some bloodshed.

This first look reminds me of a bunch of different things from Matilda to Heathers and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. There’s some definite call backs to classic horror movies like Carrie. I’m interested to see if Burton can break out of his habits and make this not feel like a cookie cutter of his movies. Jenna Ortega and the rest of the cast fit their characters well. I’m glad to see IT is around, but there’s been no word about the rest of the extended family.

Wednesday Details

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (both worked on Smallville) are showrunners, and Tim Burton is the series director.

Starring Jenna Ortega in the title role, alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, Gwendoline Christie, Christina Ricci and more. Wednesday is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Snap snap.

Wednesday premieres on Netflix this Fall.
