Will Assassin’s Creed Red be the Tenchu: Stealth Assassins sequel we’ve all been waiting for? We’ll find out as AC heads to Japan.

Assassin’s Creed Red promises to go where fans had been hoping the series would go back when Assassin’s Creed was still good. And then again, after Assassin’s Creed figured out how to be good again by letting you be a pirate. After which, the series had to once again reinvent itself as an Open World RPG. Now, at last, the series is headed for feudal Japan.

In the briefest of teasers at Ubisoft’s big weekend announcement fest, we got a glimpse of a ninja with a hidden blade.

But can Assassin’s Creed Red live up to the hype? Fans have been clamoring for years to see an Assassin’s Creed game where you got to play a ninja going around ninja-ing things. And it’s always been out of reach. Now, with the open world RPG mechanics, it’s a question of how the game will handle the stealth and subterfuge that most gamers seem to want out of the fantasy.

The quick animated glimpse of a ninja slinking around on rooftops brought to mind the greatest ninja game of all, 1998’s Tenchu Stealth Assassins which mastered the genre long before any Assassin picked up a Creed album.

This Playstation 1 game managed to deliver stealth gameplay with a wide variety of tools. Few other games come close to delivering “the ultimate shinobi fantasy.” With the new game leaning on elements of the First Civilization to bring mythological aspects to life, its anyone’s guess how much of AC: Red will be about stealth assassinations vs. fighting dragons.
