One game dares to answer the question, are games art, and if so how should their powers be used? That brave soul is Trombone Champ.

Every now and then, when you’re feeling a little bit terrified that the best of all the years have gone by, a game comes along and reminds you that you can achieve your dreams and manifest your truth. And this week, that game is Trombone Champ.

Trombone Champ released just last week, and already it’s changed video games forever. It’s proved that you can have deep lore, thrilling gameplay, and the best soundtrack. I mean just look at it.

Trombone Champ A Tale Of Toots And Soulstr

Trombone Champ is the world’s first trombone-based rhythm music game. Unlike most music games, you can freely play any note at any time. You’re not just following along with the music, you’re actually playing the music!

Trombone Champ features over 20 tracks, which include anthems, marches, classical pieces, electronica, folk classics, and more. The game also includes tracks from exciting guest artists. Each track has a unique animated background that moves with the music!

In a nutshell, it’s a rhythm game that makes funny trombone noises. Which is comedy gold, already. But it’s comedy gold with a lot of heart to it. Trombone Champ simultaneously takes itself extremely seriously but is also not afraid to be absolutely ridiculous.

And it only really works because of how hard everyone at Holy Wow is committed to making a great game. Trombone Champ understands exactly what it is, and then it aspires to be so much more.

It could have been enough to make a musical tooting engine that lets you play songs to varying degrees of success. But on top of it, there’s way more in-depth lore than you’d expect. In the intro of the game, you learn that long ago there were Twin Vessels and that you’re a brave soul who will rend the very fabric that binds this land…

You can also find a surprising number of baboons and baboon facts.

But really, you’ll just want to jump right in and get to the game so you can pick a tromboner, a trombone, and then play the game. That’s where the magic happens

Completing songs earns you toots, which you will then use to open packs of cards, much like a lootbox in other games. Here you’ll unlock famous players like C.W. Gluck, as well as primeval forces in the game like the infamous Trazom.

It’s so rare that a game comes along and leans so hard into exactly what it is and has a good time doing it. You can’t make fun of it. That would be like fighting the ocean. All you can do is let the tides take you into the depths.
