I’m not normally afraid of dolls, but this one creeps me the f*ck out. Meet M3GAN and her totally terrifying dance in the first trailer.

James Wan is known for bringing Saw, The Conjuring, and Malignant to the screen. He is one of the biggest voices in horror today – whether he’s directing or producing. The jump-scare king’s next project focuses on a familiar horror trope and gives it a modern twist. No demons or ghosts this time. This creepy doll’s AI has gone horribly wrong.

In M3GAN, a roboticist at a toy company uses artificial intelligence to create life-like dolls. They are programmed to be a kid’s best friend; as well as help parents keep tabs on their kids while keeping them safe. When the roboticist takes in her orphaned niece, she gives the girl a prototype of the doll she’s working on. A choice that she’ll regret.

Of course, I’m going to watch it. How could I not after that trailer? I didn’t think it was possible for Wan to make something more insane than Malignant, but it looks like he’s done it. While the idea isn’t really groundbreaking, the execution is sinister and creepy and…

WHY, JAMES WAN!?! WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS!?????

M3GAN Details

The movie stars Violet McGraw, Allison Williams, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey, and Stephane Garneau-Monten. It’s directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound), from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant) based on a story by Akela Cooper and James Wan.

From the most prolific minds in horror comes a fresh new face in terror. M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma, M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
