If you’re looking to do a home invasion, you better watch out – Santa Claus is coming to town and he’s gonna kick your ass in Violent Night.

David Harbour’s upcoming action movie is sure to become a seasonal rewatch for those of us who consider Die Hard the ultimate Christmas movie. And as over-eager department stores start putting out the first signs of their winter holiday decorations, Christmas has indeed come a little early this year. Because now we’ve got an actual trailer for Violent Night.

Okay, He’s Actually Santa Claus

I’ll be honest, when this movie was first pitched, I took its comparison to Die Hard very literally. I just assumed that David Harbour would be playing a grumpy ex-cop or assassin-gone-good who had a seasonal gig as a mall Santa. But his character is actually Santa Claus. Eat your heart out, Tim Allen.

The trailer shows some very creative uses of Santa’s magical accoutrements, including his bottomless toy sack, naughty and nice lists, and reindeer-led sled. This is a new take on Santa Claus, and he’s  unsurprisingly a total badass – and he’s here to save a family from an ugly home invasion.

Violent Night Trailer Highlights

My personal favorite moment of the trailer is the “shit’s getting real” scrunchie moment. If you’ve ever had long hair, you know the mood. It’s time to tie the hair back, because it’s about to get ugly.

There’s also a really funny moment when Harbour’s Santa leaves a “lump of coal” which is actually a granade in a bad guy’s lap. He turns toward another person in the scene (or the camera?) and says that he has to watch. So this begs the question – can Santa Claus break the fourth wall?

Violent Night Synopsis

This bloody holiday yarn will see Santa defending a nice family from some very naughty home-invaders.

“A team of elite mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage. But the team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus (Harbour) is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.”

The Cast of Violent Night

Harbour isn’t the only fan-favorite face in this upcoming action joint. Hollywood bae John Leguizamo will go toe-to-toe with Harbour’s St. Nick in the role of the head mercenary.

The cast also includes Beverly D’Angelo, Alex Haskell, and Alexis Louder. Edi Patterson and Cam Gigandet will also star. Sonic‘s Pat Casey and Josh Miller serve as writers for this soon-to-be cult classic.
