After a thirteen-year wait, Avatar: The Way Of Water hits theaters next month. The first trailer reveals more gorgeous visuals.

When Avatar came out in 2009, it was a shock to the system. The story by director James Cameron is meh (Ferngully meets Dances With Wolves), but it doesn’t matter; the tech is the real star. It was amazing to watch, and the mocap set a new benchmark. Avatar took home Oscars for Best Cinematography, Production Design, and Visual Effects. The first movie still has the top lifetime gross over ten years later. It was a phenomenon.

Avatar: The Way Of Water continues the story of the Na’vi. And it looks even more beautiful than the original. Since the sequels were announced, I’ve been one of those ‘who cares about this franchise’ people. The teases we’ve gotten so far have me rethinking that. Even though it’s been thirteen years, I can see this recapturing the audiences that fell for the first one. It still doesn’t look like anything else out there. Returning to a massive sci-fi fantasy world may be just what a comic-book saturated slate needs.

Avatar: The Way Of Water Details

James Cameron is back in the director’s chair. Original cast members include Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri. Also returning are Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver. New additions Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, and Vin Diesel will join them.

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way Of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

Avatar: The Way of Water arrives in theaters on December 16.
