Disney’s Strange World looks back on the early days of science fiction and adventure and creates a new story about a world in need of saving.

This year Disney Animation is taking audiences to a fantastical new world filled with bright colors and weird creatures (sadly no capybaras this time). Director Don Hall (Big Hero 6) says the new film is inspired by classic adventure stories like Journey to the Center of the Earth and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It focuses on three generations of the Clade family – the eldest of which was a great explorer. They have to overcome their differences while exploring an uncharted, wondrous, and sometimes hostile world. Along side the Clades are a motley crew that includes a three-legged dog and a mischievous blob.

Disney’s Strange World Cast & Characters

There are some recognizable voices in the cast – as well as some relatable characters.

The voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old son, Ethan, who longs for adventure; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia’s fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world.

I love Big Hero 6 and it looks really fun, so I’m looking forward to this one. Sometimes you really need a hopeful family movie in among the serious grown up dramas and gory horror movies.

Strange World arrives theaters on November 23.
