NieR: Automata is the next video game to get the animated series treatment, and it’s coming out very soon.

Animated takes on popular video games have been doing well for themselves in recent history.  Cyberpunk: Edgerunners took made us want to replay a video game that we all agreed was sort of disappointing. Arcane – based on League of Legends – came out an entire year ago, but it’s still spoken so highly of that I could have sworn it was more recent than that. And though it wasn’t animated, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 surprised us both by being a sequel, a video game movie, and managing to be good. We love our video games, and when studios manage to make high-quality versions for other mediums, we show up.

The next video game turned anime w have to look forward to is NieR: Automata Ver1. 1a, and it’s coming out in January 2023.

NieR: Automata Ver1. 1a

There have been a few trailers for NieR: Automata Ver1. 1a (which I’ll just be referring to as “the NieR: Automata anime” from now on because oh boy is that a lot to type), and none of them have been terribly detailed. This one runs a little under thirty seconds and shows us a sampling of some gorgeously fluid animation and some soundtrack, but not much else.

But I’m not sure if they need to. The official premise for the anime is supposed to be similar if not the same as the 2017 video game the anime is based on. We will follow along with androids 9S and 2B as they try to rid Earth of the machines that plague the long-abandoned planet.

But how will the anime end? Fans of the game will remember that NieR: Automata has multiple endings, and each ending reveals a little more plot. Multiple playthroughs aren’t encouraged for your own enjoyment, they’re required to get the entire story. Anime as a medium, though, doesn’t work for multiple playthroughs, so how will they get the entire story across, and which ending – if any of them – can we expect?

The Team

The NieR: Automata anime is being produced by Aniplex, which was responsible for Fullmetal Alchemist and Demon Slayer. Demon Slayer is one of the most popular current animes out there, and Fullmetal Alchemist, despite being quite a few years past finished, still manages to make it onto most favorite-anime lists. It’s just that good.  Suffice it to say, Aniplex has a history of putting out high-quality shows that people enjoy.

The anime will also be directed and co-written by Ryouji Masuyama (Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, Gurren Lagann, and Promare. Working with Masuyama in writing and organizing the story is the series creator and game director himself, Yoko Taro.

At this time it’s not known when or where fans can expect to see NieR: Automata Ver1. 1a streaming. But Given that Aniplex and Crunchyroll share an owning company in Sony, there is a decent chance that we can expect to see the series on Crunchyroll before too long. Perhaps even simulcast. Cross your fingers!

Are you excited about the NieR: Auromata anime? Did play the game and if so did you enjoy it? How do you hope they handle the multiple endings? Let us know in the comments!

Ja Ne, Adventurers!
