5 Minute Read
Nov 12 2022

The Astra Militarum has a ton of new plastic thanks to the Cadia Stands Army Box. We got it and we’re busting it wide open!

Games Workshop sent us a preview copy of Cadia Stands — the brand new Army Box Set coming for the Astra Militarum and it was packed full of new plastic kits. And I got a little too excited and started building them right away. This unboxing is a little different than are usual videos…

First off, what’s actually in the box:

  • 1x Cadian Command Squad, comprising 5x models
  • 20x Cadian Shock Troops
  • 1x Armoured Sentinel, which can also be built as a Scout Sentinel
  • 2x Ordnance Teams
  • Codex: Astra Militarum – 154-page hardback book with gloss art and a limited edition soft-touch cover
  • Datacards: Astra Militarum – 63 cards including 7 Universal Stratagems, 31 Astra Militarum Stratagems, 6 Regimental Orders, 6 Prefectus Orders, 6 Mechanised Orders, 6 Psykana Discipline psychic powers, and 1 Smite psychic power
  • 1x Cadian Transfer Sheet

That’s officially all the contents. Now, as far as the new Codex Review, we’ll go over that at another time. Today, we’re just focusing on the models and those new kits.

Cadian Command Squad

You get a TON of options for each and every single one of these kits. All the infantry units come with multiple special weapons (Melta, Flamer, Plasma, and Grenade Launcher). With the Command Squad, you also get a variety of support options and various poses.

If you wanted to kit out your Command Squad for basic ranged shooting with lasguns or deck them out with all the bells and whistles you can do that. If it’s an option in the codex, it’s available on the sprue. If you plan on running multiple Command Squads you can kit them all out differently which is nice!

Cadian Shock Troops

The new Cadia Shock Trooper sprues are impressive. Almost too impressive. I kinda feel bad for anyone looking to build a horde army of Guard Infantry. These models are a lot more complex than the old kit — but they look fantastic!

In the box you’ll get two sets of these sprues. And again, you’ll get all your special weapon options, various poses, lasguns, specialty troopers, and close combat options for the Squad leader. And I know folks want to know how many female guardsmen heads are there — I don’t know. I didn’t have time to count. There’s a lot. Everyone’s wearing a helmet or hat — except for like 1 bald guy. There’s just so many options to choose from I got overwhelmed and was building on a deadline. It’s Guardsmen and there’s a lot of them!

Armoured Sentinel

The new Sentinel kit is also really neat. You’ll end up building the Scout version as you’re building the Armored version because both kits use the same roll cage. The armored Sentinel just has, well, armored plates you glue on. This is another kit packed with options.

I gotta say, I personally think the plasma cannon option looks the coolest. But I went for the classic Lascannon. You can have the secondary option with a spotlight chainsaw. There’s also some extras like a Hunter-killer missile or you can load up on accessories. I really liked the extra doodads on this sprue. If I were starting a new guard army I’d save every single extra bit to make cool thematic dioramas for my bases. Or save them for the tanks…

Field Ordnance Teams

Oh man. The new Field Ordnance Teams are probably my favorite new kits from this batch. Just like the Sentinel, you get SO many cool extras. There’s ammo crates, extra shells, battery packs — it’s wild. You really can make each one of them a mini diorama in their own right. Personally, I’d like to make some sand bags and really make those bases detailed. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to get crazy with these bases. I’m genuinely excited to see what you hobbyists out there do with these kits once you get your hands on them! They are gonna be a ton of fun to model up.

There are actually 3 sprues for this kit. I believe that they are going to be sold two per box which is pretty cool! You’ll have enough bits to build 2 of any combination. If you want double Battle Cannons, las, or Missiles, you can do that. Or you can mix and match. I will say there is ONE model in this kit that’s kneeling. So Cadia might stand..except for that one trooper who’s helping to man the Ordnance.

The boxed set is a really good addition and based on some rough math it’s also one heck of a deal. I might have been a little off on the pricing but for the amount of stuff in this box vs Individual MSRP, it’s gonna be a good purchase if you’re an Astra Militarum player.
