2022 was a big year for Warhammer video games. Big strategy battles, turn-based-tactics, even VR, there were tons. These were our faves.

This year was a good year for Warhammer games. It started off swinging in the other direction, but what a roller coaster ride it’s been, full of some dizzying highs that led to this being a pretty fantastic year, all things considered.

Weirdly enough, some of the lows were from the same games. It just goes to show how much something can improve the more you play. And play we did. So today we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite Warhammer games of 2022.

Total War: Warhammer III – Immortal Empires

Let’s start with the reason this article isn’t titled “our favorite Warhammer 40K games of 2022.” Total War: Warhammer III was an absolute powerhouse of a time sink this year. When it launched, it stuttered and stumbled, sure. But, as we got closer and closer to Immortal Empires, things looked better and better.

And then they mashed together all the world maps from all the Total War: Warhammer games. And it’s everything you could want out of that premise.

And they’re still working on making it better. But AI concerns, end-game scenarios, settlement battles, all of these have come a long way to make Total War: Warhammer III not only one of our favorites, but also the best in the series. Immortal Empires is your Warhammer Fantasy dreams come true.

There’s a reason the playerbase jumped up to higher than at launch when Immortal Empires came out.

Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters

It’s Warhammer 40K plus XCOM as you take charge of some Grey Knights out to give Nurgle an infusion of plasma. And bolters. And psycannons and anything else you can think of too.

But this game was a ton of fun to dive into. And while the UI could use some work. There’s no denying how much there is to sink your teeth into. You get to customize your squad, outfitting every unit with specialized gear and powers.

And the map evolves as Nurgle’s daemons and the festering Bloom adapt to your presence. It’s one of the better 40K tactical games we’ve played in a while.

Warhammer 40K: Darktide

The new kid on the block. Darktide came out basically yesterday, in terms of total release time. But this too has been an excellent place to spend one’s free time.

Of course, it still has its problems. After all, Verintide 2 did, and this is Vermintide 2 in space with more guns. Some of the classes could use a little bit of love, some of the enemies probably need rebalancing.

But even with all of that in consideration, this game still sucks you in. If you just want to squad up for the Emperor, this is the place to do it, at least until Space Marine 2 comes out.

Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister

Warhammer 40K in Virtual Reality is both dizzying and surprisingly fun. If you want to be immersed in the grim darkness of a distant future where there’s only war, instead of only meetings, this is the game for you.

You can run it on either PC VR or Oculus, And while the game still has the issues that most smaller VR game releases have, they weren’t enough to get in the way of having a good time. This game gives you the feel of grabbing a chainsword or plasma pistol and jumping right in.

What were your favorite games this year?
