Announced at PAX Unplugged, the tabletop titan Gloomhaven is getting a new adaptation. You are not prepared for the Gloomhaven RPG.

In an ouroboros-like fit of inspiration, Gloomhaven announced at PAX Unplugged, that soon adventurers without massive gaming tables can get in on the action. As a Gloomhaven RPG, adapted from the board game inspired by other dungeon-crawling RPGs, will be coming soon to a tabletop near you.

If you haven’t played it, that’s understandable. Getting a group together to consistently play Gloomhaven faces the same difficulties getting a group together to consistently play RPGs. Which is how you know the two are related. But Gloomhaven is the current top-rated game on BoardGameGeek. It’s one of the biggest and best of the lot.

In a nutshell, it’s a party-based tactical dungeon crawler, where players race against a dwindling clock with a deck of abilities built as they level up. If you want to try, you can find a digital version on Steam.

Gloomhaven RPG

Per Cephalofair Games, the official Gloomhaven RPG will kick off with a big crowdfunding campaign in April 2023. And the folks at Cephalofair know exactly how to make a Kickstarter as explosive as it can get. With a new line of fantasy miniatures and so much more waiting, there’s a lot to look forward to when the doors open to Gloomhaven.

But the RPG promises more than just dice. Gloomhaven the RPG promises to be just as focused on player savviness as the board game is. Per Cephalofair Games’ announcement:

“We’re creating a robust skill system that makes interacting with this newly expanded world and uncovering its mysteries always engaging. And when you run across a situation that can only be resolved with weapons, well, the Gloomhaven combat system will still be there to make sure that is always interesting as well.

And this newly developed system integrates card management into the role-playing experience. That’s right, we’ve added a third skill check action to these cards, which lets you perform great feats out of combat, but also opens up a new dimension in combat, letting you swing from chandeliers, kick through walls, or even convince the bad guys to stop fighting.”

Players can expect to play any combination of class and ancestry. Inox Spellweavers, Orchid Craghearts, whatever you can dream of. All of it goes into your own custom PC deck.

The Gloomhaven RPG Kickstarts in April.
