Johnny Yong Bosch brought the English language version of Vash the Stampede to life twenty years ago, and now he’s doing it again.

Crunchyroll announced today in a tweet that Johnny Yong Bosch would be joining the English-language dub cast of Trigun Stampede.

If you’re new to the Trigun universe(s), this may not be exciting news… or news at all. After all, Bosch is a pretty well-known voice actor. His extensive résumé includes One Piece, Dorohedoro, Demon Slayer, Boruto, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Gundam SEED – just to name a few. But for those of us who have been in the anime game a little longer – or scrolled much farther down in his voice acting credits – Bosch is the original English language voice of Vash the Stampede. In fact, it’s one of his first big voice-acting roles and possibly the one that put him on the anime map back in 2000.

It’s always interesting to see an anime bringing back the original voice cast for a reboot. And for fans, it can be strangely comforting to hear that your favorite character still sounds exactly the same. This doesn’t happen terribly often, but another notable instance was the returning cast of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

The first subbed episode of Trigun Stampede premiered on Saturday and will have weekly releases every Saturday at 8:30 am PST for the remainder of the season. But dubbed episodes will debut on January 21st. They will also begin streaming on Saturdays. The ADR director for the dub is Jeremy Inman, who is also known for his work on Golden Kamuy and Deca-Dence.

At this time they haven’t announced who else’s voices we can expect to hear in the English Language dub, but the Japanese stars of the show include:

  • Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Vash the Stampede
  • Sakura Andou as Meryl Stryfe
  • Yoshimasa Hosoya as Nicholas D. Wolfwood
  • Kenji Matsuda as Roberto De Niro
  • Junya Ikeda as Millions Knives
  • Kouki Uchiyama as Legato Bluesummers
  • TARAKO as Zazie the Beast
  • Ryusei Nakao as William Conrad
  • Tomoyo Kurosawa as Young Vash
  • Yumiri Hanamori as Young Knives
  • Maaya Sakamoto as Rem Saverem

Crunchyroll describes Trigun Stampede as:

“Vash the Stampede’s a joyful gunslinging pacifist, so why does he have a $$6 million bounty on his head? That’s what’s puzzling rookie reporter Meryl Stryfe and her jaded veteran partner when looking into the vigilante only to find someone who hates blood. But their investigation turns out to uncover something heinous—his evil twin brother, Millions Knives.”

This reimaging of the 1995 manga and 1998 anime is off to a familiar start with a few key changes. Long-time fans will recognize major plot reveals from later in the original series laid out right away, while the new CGI art style lends itself to some character design revamps. And then there are changes such as Meryl’s career change from insurance to reporting and the total exclusion of Milly Thompson as a character. But major details like Vash’s backstory, brother, and rogue’s gallery of villains look like they will be mostly the same. At least based on what we’ve seen so far. As a long-time Trigun fan, I’m cautiously optimistic.

Are you excited to see the return of Johnny Yong Bosch to Trigun? Who else would you like to see join the voice cast? What do you think of Trigun Stampede so far? Let us know in the comments!
