It’s fire and acid. Or maybe it’s acid and fire. Either way these new Salamanders are hawt. Feel the burn from the Spawn of Chotec.

Salamanders were one of the units I was hoping would get a refresh and Games Workshop did not disappoint. Not only did they get a phat new model with some added girth, their handlers got a glow-up, too. And the rules are going to have them spitting hot fire!

“Found in the most volcanic regions of the Mortal Realms – and hence all over Aqshy, where they’re often hunted by Fyreslayers – the Spawn of Chotec are fire-spitting salamanders which the Seraphon revere as the offspring of the sun god himself. “

These new Salamanders certainly beefed-up since their last version. Here’s a look at the current/old model:

Clearly they have traded in their trademark green armor plates for a new more “natural” look. Plus they are really letting their plumage out.

Furthermore, I also really like the new lore around these beasties.

“In between burning sacrificial victims alive, these disciples are tasked with raising salamanders – then sedating them with crawtoad venom and fitting Old One technology into their skulls. These precious relics allow the Sun Acolytes to direct their choleric charges with light-emitting staves.”

Yep — that’s right! That headphone behind the eye is really some “Old One Tech” and allows their handlers to better direct their attacks. And apparently the skinks are using laser pointers:

“When a skink handler marks a foe with a dot of ruby-tinted light, the Spawn of Chotec hawks a viscous Glob of Flame Acid at the target. The ensuing splatter not only ignites immediately, it’s caustic enough to leave victims vulnerable to further attacks.”

So it’s now confirmed: Salamanders are basically cats and skinks use laser pointer to keep them entertained. But what can their ranged attacks do now? That’s the really interesting part…

It’s a ranged 24″ shot that’s only 1 attack. However it can do D6 damage which is actually not the spiciest part about the attack. The debuff from their shot lingers and causes the target to take a further -1 rend to all other attacks until the end of the turn!

This is a big change from their former roll of pure damage output and makes the a bit of a debuff unit. That additional rend could really make other units a lot more effective in the combat phase. Imagine if the Saurus Warriors get a -1 rend base. Now combine that with this attack to make them a -2 and suddenly those new Warriors are swinging much harder. I wonder if the Seraphon are going to have even more ways to stack rend in their battletome…

There’s a new book coming in the summer and it’s gonna be a hot one!
