One ship—and some meddling teens—turned the tide of the One Year War. We breakdown The Pegasus-class SCV-70 White Base.

The Universal Century was a tumultuous time. And the single largest and most devastating conflict, the One Year War, woudl come to define this era more than any other events. And while the Earth Federation would ultimately win the day after being defeated at A Baoa Qu, and one ship in particular helped turn the tide, the Pegasus-class mobile suit carrier known as the SCV-70 White Base.

Through the first part of the One Year War, this ship earned a fearsome reputation among its enemies. Known as the “Trojan Horse”, owing to its unique engine shape, the SCV-70 White Base was instrumental in many major moments during the One Year War.

SCV-70 White Base – Capabilities And Design

The SCV-70 was the first in the line of new Pegasus-class ships for the Earth Federation. Designed at he massive military complex known as Jaburo, located deep in the heart of the Amazon River basin, the White Base reflected the needs of an Earth under heavy attack from Zeon. The White Base was highly modular.

Its primary configuration was seven basic blocks: the central hangar, bridge/living quarters, engine room and read landing port, two main hangars, two main engines. And the White Base’s engines were powerful. With two main engine batteries capable of outputting 32,000 tons of thrust, the Pegasus-class carrier had surprising speed. But perhaps its greatest strength was also equipped with a Minovsky Craft System, allowing it to quickly enter or exit Earth’s atmosphere.

The SCV-70’s primary function was a mobile suit carrier. Thus its hangars were outfitted with many subsystems designed to facilitate mobile suit use, including landing systems, equipment change systems, and a mobile suit launching system that allowed White Base to provide fast deployment and support.

As far as weaponry goes, the ship carried one 580mm 2-barrel main gun, which was originally designed to fire shells, but was later retrofitted to fire beams. Backing that up were two mega particle cannons, as well as eight 3-tube missile launchers, and rear facing 4-tube missile launchers, as well as eighteen anti-aircraft turrets mounted across the SCV-70’s hull.

September 0079 UC – Flight of the Pegasus

In Setpember UC 0079, the White Base emerged from production, straight into field-testing. And perhaps, a much more rigorous test than originally planned. The SCV-70 was sent to retrieve experimental mobile suits from Side 7, when it was pulled into battle with a unit of Zeon special forces led by Char Anzable.

Thanks to the actions of the SCV-70 and civilians, and an experimental mobile suit, designated RX-78-2 Gundam, the Zeon attack was repelled. Immediately thereafter, the White Base escaped to Luna II, rendezvousing with Earth Federal Space Forces. But Char was in hot pursuit.

The SCV-70 fled to the ruins of Seattle, where it was drawn into battle once again. After assisting General Revil with a special operation, it became clear that Zeon was assigning many special resources to the SCV-70’s capture. But thanks to the swift action of the crew and Operation Odessa, the Zeon Earth Attack Force had its might broken on Earth. And the White Base, at last, could return to Jaburo. Though Char Anzable followed in an attempt to infiltrate the Earth military forces headquarters.

End Of War – The White Base Goes To Space

After repulsing Char’s attack, the White Base was rearmed, and sent into space as part of a diversionary move to draw Zeon forces away from Solomon. And while the White Base was able to destroy an entire fleet, the biggest, most pivotal moment came during the battle of A Baoa Qu.

At A Baoa Qu, after facing the destructive might of a gigantic colony laser known as the Solar Ray, the White Base led the charge, ramming into the asteroid base’s surface to force a way inside. The White Base’s attack was a success, but it came at a cost. The ship was set to self-destruct after ramming.

But what a legacy the White Base left behind.
