We’re taking a trip to the Old World. It’s time to check out some of the old school Regiments of Renown.

When Games Workshop announced the new Regiments of Renown for Age of Sigmar I had some mixed feelings. It really boils down to “I hope these don’t break the game.” Why did I initially go there? Well, I remember a few Old School Regiments of Renown from Warhammer Fantasy. Some of them were fun and unique. Others? Well, let’s call them “less fun.” Here’s a few that really stuck out to me.

Ricco’s Republican Guard

You might remember these pikemen from WFB. They were kind of busted in that they were wielding pikes and could fight in more ranks than anyone else. At least at the time there were introduced. Did it make sense? Yeah — turns out charging a unit of pikes is BAD. Was it fun to play against? Debatable. Plus those pikes were metal and really long…and very pokey.

Pirazzo’s Lost Legion

Hey another unit of Pikemen! Fun. I think everything I said about Ricco’s Republican Guard also applies here. I promise this whole list isn’t just me bashing pikemen unit but they really were kinda painful to play against. And also with. Again, metal miniature pikes that were abnormally long back in the day. Ouch.

Vespero’s Vendetta

Alright this unit was actually really cool looking. They were a unit of duelists and had a very good sculpt for a leader (at the time). Vespero had that iconic mask and his whole unit wield a sword and dagger. Plus they had some really iconic art, too:

They might not have been the “meta” but they were a unforgettable unit on the tabletop.

Bearmen of Urslo

A Norse unit lead by a freaking Werebear? Yes please! This unit leaned hard into the classic Bear/Berserker norse-theme and I dug it. Were they a little static looking? Sure — that was old school Warhammer rank-and-file for you. But they stood out thanks to their unique command.

When your leader is a literal Bear-man, there’s not much that’s going to intimidate you.

Birdmen of Catrazza

This unit is on our list for the sheer ridiculousness of it. The Birdmen of Catrazza could “fly” and packed crossbows. Really, they would glide around and pepper your foes. Clearly a take on some crazy Da Vinci machines they were at least memorable even if they weren’t the most effective.

There’s a TON of famous units from the old Dogs of War Regiments of Renown. Do you have any other favorites?
